Way Down Yonder in the Pawpaw Patch

Please tell me my family and I are not the only ones who still eat these.

My wife and I are both one generation removed from the back country mountains. SO we both grew up knowing alot about indigenious foods like the pawpaw. As adults disenchanted with "modern" life we moved back into the mountains. The area of VA we live in calls itself the moonshine capital of the world, yet almost everyone I have encountered has no idea even what a pawpaw is let alone it is edible.

Its kinda good that no one knows I guess. I have only found one pawpaw patch, but it is quite large covering well over a couple of acres. I have bee harvesting pawpaws and have gotten about 35 pounds so far and I can almost gurantee another 20 before I have cleaned it out. The rain was not so great for me, but it was great for pawpaws. I found out they are pollinated by carrion eaters and with all the rain the decomp is up so more flies and such to pollinate them.

The plan is to eat as many fresh as we can and freeze the left for using later. For most things they can funtion just like a banana, so I am thinking pawpaw black walnut bread.emoticon

I've read about pawpaws, but I've never had one. I live up in Northern Michigan, which is just outside their range (in the southern part of Michigan there is actually a town named Pawpaw) - but I thought I might be able sneak them in (I'm in a slightly warmer subzone).

I've tried planting a few trees, but so far, I've lost them all.

Good luck with the pawpaw patch!

We are attempting to save seeds from the pawpaws. I am going to try and start my own patch here, we are plenty warm enough for them, and since I live in the hollows we should have plenty of bottomland for them. They grow under larger trees so I am going to attempt it in two spots, one in the open and one under some trees along, both along drain swails. I am a little worried I have not seen a single patch within 20 miles of my house.

If I have enough seeds I am willing to do a an exchange if anyone is interested.

Oooo yum! My mom is dying to plant some pawpaws at the farm. That's so cool that you found a wild patch. There are some wild ones here but not many and I don't know that I've ever seen a true wild one.

What a find!

I've never had a pawpaw, buy my husband has. He grew up on a mountain ridge in southern VA. I'd have no clue what I was looking at unless he told me..lol.

I'm excited for you that you found these, though. What about a pawpaw smoothie???? Is that possible? Would it taste good?

Where abouts in VA? Feel free to send the area to me here either in e-mail or PM, if you're uncomfortable just putting it 'out there' for all to see. Just wondering if you're close to where he grew up....or even close to where I am now. Curiosity lol

We live in southern Franklin County. On the Eastern side of the Blue Ridge. Only a county abouve the NC line. Were we are is actually closer to Floyd County, a huge hippie mecca...sort of

I am not sure were yall are located other than Eastern TN, but we are only about 3-4 hours from Gatlinburg.

A pawpaw smoothie(well actually a shake) has crossed my mind. We have mixed it into oatmeal and it is quite good.

Do you know where Kingsport is? I'm just west of there, if you know where that is. We are actually pretty close if you're that close to Gatlinburg. Probably about an hour and a half to 2 hours away. I'm 90 minutes from Asheville, NC. My DH's family live in Dryden, VA, around Pennington Gap area. Big Stone.....etc.

We should try to meet some day emoticon That would be awesome. I've had the wonderful priveledge of meeting TexasMadness in person this past Spring/Summer. She's as neat in person as she is here. If you'd like to give a meeting a try, let me know and I'll see what I can work out. I'm an hour from Bristol, VA..I KNOW you have to know where that is. My best friend is just around the corner from the speedway there. This would be awesome emoticon
