Houseplants

Do any of you like to keep houseplants?

I do.
I have 2 Peace lilies, 2 African violets, a fairly large aloe plant, a red shammrock, a pink cyclomen and a dish garden that has a variety of things in it, including 2 types of vines. Oh, and I have another type of vine in a hanging basket that I have hanging from a curtain rod on the door to the outside from the computer room.

In the summer, they all get put out on the porch where we have 2 chairs and a table (we eat out there a lot in warmer months). All the plants make it look so nice and lush out there.

I enjoy being able to have plants not only outdoors but indoors in the winter. It helps to break up the ugliness that winter can bring. And there's the added bonus of adding good things to the air emoticon

Re: Houseplants

Oooh, that's a great topic!

At home, I have a gardenia on my desk and some orchids on the window sill. On the shelf next to my des, I have a large spider plant. Plus I keep a ponytail palm on another shelf, but that place isn't good for it. I'm thinking about moving it to my practice.

At work, I have a schefflera, a maiden hair fern, a peace lily and another orchid (phalinopsis). For my practice, I want another peace lily, a palm tree and maybe a little orange tree. We'll see about that.

I love plants! emoticon

I don't have very many houseplants. I'm still learning how to keep plants in pots alive! I can grow vegetables, but there's something about a houseplant.

But I do have an african violet and an orchid.

Re: Houseplants

The one thing I regret is that I don't have anything that smells good in the house. If I can find something this summer that I could turn into a house plant, that has a nice fragrance to it, I'll probably get it. I hate how the house smells during the winter...it gets so stale and stuffy. We keep windows and doors open as long as weather permits. I just hate being all closed in, and that's another good thing that the houseplants do for me. Keeps me from feeling totally cut off from outside. I try to water them once a week on the same day. I used to have to write it on the calendar so I wouldn't forget to water them. Now, it's just something I do. I just keep an eye on the plants because sometimes they may need watering more than just once a week. Not usually, but if we have to crank the heat up, it tends to dry them out faster, so....I water about every 4-5 days instead of every 7.

Firle, sounds like you have some nice plants, too. My dad could grow orchids like no one I've ever seen. He had a greenhouse full of them when I was little.
I've never heard of a ponytail palm...what does that look like?

Texas, you have an orchid too? I wonder how I'd do with an orchid. I had heard they are hard to take care of.
If you're apt to look at a calendar to see what appointments or what-not that you have, try using that to help remind you to water. I don't use any fertilizer on my houseplants (I probably should, though), and I don't worry overly much about plant food. I used to kill everything I touched when it came to houseplants. Now, it seems there's not any that I can't handle. Not sure what changed, or even when it changed, but I'm not complaining =)

I would very much like to have houseplants, but circumstances prevent it here - the house is very dark - not much natural light gets in at all, so plants go a whiter shade of pale, and give up the spirit.

Saijen, the ponytail palm looks like this - except that I have much smaller versions. emoticon

Wikipedia - Ponytail Palm

There are some orchids that are easy to keep. Phalinopsis, for example, don't demand a lot. A little water (very important for orchids, most die because of being drowned), and a little fertilizer (half of what normal plants need). Of course, they also love light, but little sun.

Try it! emoticon

Re: Houseplants

I tend to be drawn to succulents and cactus plants because their unusual shape - sometimes tangled and strange, at other times simple and symmetrical - appeal to me, and also because the cats won't chew on them!

I have a huge pencil plant, some variety of pillow cactus, some variety of pad cactus, and a variations of the jade plant called "Hobbit Toes."

I also have some herbs that I moved in to work for the winter - catnip (can't keep that at home emoticon ), basil, rosemary, lemon grass, and thyme.

All the plants go outside in the summer - the house is kind of dark, and they really like being outside.

I have two Lavender plants inside that are trying to bloom but it's to cold for them to take that final step. I have pots of Thyme, Oregano and one pot of Sage which honestly isn't doing to well.
I have one plant in the dark kitchen window (very deep and faces north) that specifically said it prefers low light. Can't remember what it's called but it's doing VERY well there. Will have to re-pot it again soon. It has pink and green leaves....... almost had the name but it continues to escape me.

Re: Houseplants

Firle, that ponytail palm looks really neat. If my house weren't so small, I'd love to have something like that. As it is, the plants I already have take up quite a bit of room, especially in my diningroom where the bulk of them are.

muladzh, I wonder if some type of plant that prefers the shade would work for you. If you're interested in having houseplants, you may want to talk to someone in a garden shop and see if there is anything that would work for a home with little natural light. Of course, you can always get a growth light to put over the plants that works the same as the sun.

Corbin, I've seem some of the neatest looking succulents. We almost bought several for indoors this past Spring. I'll probably end up with some this year. Cacti, I'm not too sure about. I've not seen any that really 'speak' to me. As for the herbs, I usually just plant mine in the garden, but have thought about doing some for indoors in the winter so I an have not only dried, but fresh as well.

Firle, I may have to check into an orchid then if they're not that hard to keep.

Curious, I LOVE lavender and I bet it smells really good indoors. That's another one I may have to give a try.

Ok...I'm outta here for now y'all.... emoticon
