Kitchen Remodel

Here are some pics of what has been keeping me so busy lately!

Here's the kitchen the day I looked at it on the market:

Image

Image

Right at the beginning of the remodel - a few of the uppers removed, the fridge and stove moved, door to the garage moved, etc. I have a harsh dislike for black and white tile after trying to get that stuff off...

Image

And yesterday, about half way through the day. The wall is gone!!! That's the utility room behind it - a pretty useless room, just used to store the water heater. It's also the FIRST room you see when you come into the house since no one uses the front door. I wanted it to be something nice and not just a weird dark closet looking thing. So the whole kitchen is being expanded!

I'll keep you guys posted as I progress!

Wow, looks like you have a ways to go, I hope it all goes perfectly smooth with no glitches. I have a strong dislike for black and white tile and I've never had to pull any off.

Texas, my first thought when I looked at the first photos was...what a small kitchen....so I'm glad that you're getting to expand it into a larger room!
Hopefully it won't take too long to get it done, and as Turindar says....you don't have any glitches along the way! emoticon

Re: Kitchen Remodel

It really was small. I didn't mind so much when it was just me in the house. But as soon as hubby moved in and we both tried to something in the kitchen, I realized just how bad it was! Especially because the main counter space for food prep was on the "L" part...right where you also stand to work at the stove. It was literally a one person kitchen. Now it's going to be BIG!!!

Didn't make much progress last night. Just made some plans for moving the washer and dryer (which are to the left of all of the photos) to the hall closet. It's going to take a bit of engineering...or a bunch of money. Right now, I'm aiming for a more clever solution than just throwing several thousand at the project (to jack hammer the slab and lay a new drain pipe).

Tonight we move the water heater to the garage!

Wow, that sure looks like a lot of work! I'm sure it'll be worth it, though.

It's great to have a kitchen you can move around it, and it makes cooking together so much more fun. All the best for smooth progress.

Re: Kitchen Remodel

We got the water heater moved last night. I figured it would take 2, maybe 3 hours. WELL, 8 hours later, we were finally turning the water back on to check out the new pipes. Much grunting, groaning and of course cursing had gone on and we were all pretty tired. The worst part for me was rewiring the heater. I had to crawl on my belly through some spaces in the attic to free the wire. I was filthy, sweaty and crabby by the end of it! Pops (my dad) did all of the solder joints in the copper pipes and hubby was our general helper (he's new to handy work).

When it was time to test the new system, my job was to stand in the kitchen and yell to the street (where the main valve is) in case there were any leaks so the water could be shut off again. I stood there...listening carefully...staring intently at the new connections...perhaps a little apprehensive that there would be a pinhole leak. All of the sudden, I heard a huge GUSH and lots of running water! I couldn't see where it was coming from but I ran to the door yelling "off! off! off!" and dancing around like a ninny! Hubby dropped the flashlight and Pops struggled find the valve again in the dark until the flashlight was recovered. So it took them quite a bit of time to actually turn the water off.

In the meantime, the kitchen flooded with a good bit of water. By the time hubby and Pops came running in from the street, I was laughing. It wasn't one of our new joints that broke. We had simply entirely forgot to hookup the hoses from the valves to the sink. Essentially, there were wide open holes that the water was just pouring through. Alas, we sloshed through the water and got the hoses connected. Kali loved that our kitchen now doubled as a slip-n-slide as well. emoticon The second time we turned the water on, everything was fine.

It felt good to take a hot shower and crawl into bed after all of that!

Oh, my, what a tough time you had! At least now you can go on with the less demanding tasked. I bet you were really glad to be able to take that hot shower!

I'm sorry, but I just had to laugh when I read that it was nothing more than hoses that didn't get hooked up.

I know you are so glad that part of things is done and I can imagine that that hot shower felt better than it usually does!

Good goin, y'all!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Living in a house that's being worked on is such a PITA, but once you get it all done, you'll be able to sit back, and every time you look around you'll think "I did that!" It's a good feeling.

P.S. I HATE plumbing work... It's not that hard, but you're always in cramped and icky places, and wet. Yuck.
