I have been checking out solar energy - my husband and I are seriously considering implementing some solar panels, etc. into our home and life.

I think good one is "wind" power. I have not came across as much about it so far. emoticon

Re: Solar energy

My folks have solar panels on their house. Their electric bill is something silly like $5 a month for air conditioning a 3000 sq ft house! emoticon Some months, the city owes them money since they feed into the grid!!!

When we get our roof redone, we are putting up solar. The things are expensive - around $5,000 per kW (the average house needs about 3 kW during peak usage) but the city of Austin pays for $4,000!

That's not bad at all really - $1000 to save thousands more in electric bills. That is one of the reason we are looking at solar energy - we have a large home and our bills are high so we thought one way to save money would be to invest in some upfront solar panals using our tax return and get tax credits and local grants to reimburse some of the cost to save us 100's of dollars each month. We are going to look for bigger property before we do it - I want more garden space and we are going to get some livestock - chickens for eggs and a cow for dairy, etc.

We have a goal to become as "self-sufficient" as we can in the next five years - food wise, energy wise, etc. It would be nice and I think cheaper in the long run to be self sufficient.
