Oh! I wasn't offended Saijen, I just wanted to clarify what I meant! lol I agree that no one should go into homeschooling blindly, and it certainly is not for everyone! emoticon

Homeschooling done with any modicum of effort can sure be rewarding.

Bobby, I agree. Things have certainly changed in both public and home school. It's just too bad that there are those parents out there that say they want to homeschool, yet do nothing to prepare their kids for a life outside of the home and their parents (like my sister-in-law has done).

KayJaye, I'm glad you took no offense. I certainly didn't mean any. I have a hard time, sometimes, putting what I'm trying to say into type. Depends on the subject..lol.

Re: I want to do homeschooling

Thought I might update this.

Where we are now:

We've had a lot of changes in the past few months, so during the summer I let my kids have complete free time. There was just so much else going on (we're in a slow process of going green, which will become a fast process as soon as we get a new house; we're learning to cook and giving up processed food crap; we're living on monthly budgets now (very small ones) and the debts we had [which looked like they would be paid off in 10 years] should be paid off in two).

My eldest, Star, went into primary 2 having forgotten how to read. My middle just started nursery. She goes to school next year. My youngest just turned one.

We recently bought a telescope (£10) at a carboot. I intend to do a solar system project with Star as soon as I work out how to go about it. Probably work it out tonight, start it over the weekend or so. We have a build your own solar system kit, too.

I'm sort of planning to follow their interests. Star is obsessed with the solar system; she thinks she is called Star because she was a star (like in Stardust).

At least I don't have pregnancy questions to deal with.

Kayla (my middlest) started PC work today. She did painting because I'm just getting her used to the computer/using a mouse. She loves counting and we regularly play counting games. Next week I'll start teaching her to read.

I have a workbook for her.

As my daughters are at school/going to school, I intend to make the school the best it can be. I volunteer one day a week in the school library. It was basically just a pile of books but I've developed an order for it, (age and interest level dependent) and I am working on a catalogue system.

I joined the Parent Council and got voted chairperson on my second meeting. I am joining the PTA. If my kids must go to school, I intend to see that they go to a great school.

Now I'm off to find Solar System Resources.

This sounds like a good compromise for now. You're being very involved in their public school life, which can make it much better for them. You'll know more about what is going on within the school. You may also have a bit more pull to get some changes if you're this involved as opposed to a parent who is not and has no clue what is really happening. I actually enjoyed being involved in my girls' school. At times it brought us closer together...other times, well, not so much..lol. It's hard being the teacher in their class at times. anyway, it sounds like you've started a good solid way to deal with things as they stand for now. Good for you!!! emoticon

Congrats on the debt management! That is something that far too many people have problems with, but it sounds like you have a good handle on it!

The school situation sounds pretty good. Being involved is an excellent step - both at the school and in other activities to help your kids learn. Good work!
