Floor

I guess I should have put this in the homestead forum, huh? lol....I'll move it later.

DH and I got permission from our landlord to refinish the hardwood floors in the house we rent. We were going to do 3 rooms, the computer room/den, our bedroom, and the diningroom. Well, we are only doing 2 rooms right now. We'll do the others next spring/summer. It took my DH and my BiL all day yesterday to get the 2 rooms sanded. My BiL said the wood was so hard that the sandpaper just glided over it...didn't sand it like it was supposed to. They got it as good as they possibly good. Got all the wood dust up then got the floors stained in both rooms. They are gorgeous. I'll post a pic when they are all done. Well, the stain was still wet this morning so they ended up wiping the floors with dry clothes and turning fans on to help it dry. It had to be completely dry before they could do the first coating of polyurethane. Finally got one coat of the polyurethane done, and 6-7 hours later, it's still a bit on the tacky side. So, the second coat will have to wait to go on tomorrow. Hopefully that coat will dry quickly so they can get the third and final coat on tomorrow as well. If not, the third coat will have to wait to go on possibly as long as till next weekend. THEN.....it takes 14 days for it to be completely ready for furniture to be moved back onto it. We could put furniture down, but it would most probably end up leaving indentations in the layers of polyurethane....so..we'll be sleeping in the camper for at least 2 weeks.

My desk is in the livingroom. Not a huge problem, however, everything else is in my diningroom or in my daughter's room. My filing cabinet, mattress/box spring, Witch's cabinet, DH's gun cabinet and some other small stuff is in the diningroom along with my round table and 4 chairs, china cabinet, a small 2 drawer cabinet, 2 small shelf things that hold flowers, a small table for my other flowers, a corner shelf......oh...and 3 cats are locked into the diningroom and kitchen/utility area. To get from the livingroom to the kitchen, we have to go out the side door, around the house to the back door. The only usable bathroom right now is just off the livingroom, as is my daughter's room. Tight quarters right now!!

We'll get there eventually, I know...but I sure hope this stuff dries better tomorrow!!! LOL.

Re: Floor

sounds great and very pretty. I know you've been wanting to do that for about 9 or 10 years or so.

Is A up there with you, I thought she had moved back down here, or maybe that was just a visit.

At least it's pretty good camping weather and you do have the house for other uses.

I can hardly wait for these floors to get totally done, Fenyx. They are so pretty. They did only get one coat of the polyurethane on today. BiL will come by tomorrow to help get the last coat on, if this second coat is dry. I did the really high gloss, and man, it's shiny!!! Looks wet even when it's dry..hehe.

A. had only come down for a vacation for a week. She is wanting to move down there, but she probably won't be able to do that until sometime next year. She's got to save up enough to go directly into an apartment. I wish we could help her out, but...can't :-/

Boy, that's a big job - I did the floors once. I couldn't believe all the sawdust that we got, and all the dust in general... but it sure does look nice when done!

Good luck with your time schedule, Saijen!

Corbin, I don't think we had as much wood dust as was expected since the sander couldn't hit the wood like they wanted....BUT, there is some. As soon as this last coat of polyurethane gets put down and dry, I'll go in, in my sock feet, of course, and dust, take a damp rag to the walls, etc. My SiL is going to come and help me. I took the curtains down out of those 2 rooms and washed them, so before they go back up, I'll wash the windows in those 2 rooms.

I did buy a small electric heater at Walmart yesterday, that is awesome. It's digital. You can set it to run on just the thermostat all the time, or you can set it to run on the thermostat for either 4, 8 or 12 hours, then the heater turns itself off. It also has just a fan to use in warmer weather. Oh, you can actually set it to a certain temp you want the room to stay at, too. I set it for 70* for the camper last night, and we stayed nice and toasty all night long. Was really nice. By the time we are ready to put furniture back into the rooms, it will be cool enough that my daughter can use it in her room.
Anyway....things are progressing.

Re: Floor

The third and final coat of polyurethane was put on this evening. WOOHOO!!! Sometime next week, when it's had time to really set, I'll do some cleaning....wash walls, windows, put up clean curtains, etc. Can't wait till I'm able to really get my rooms put back together.

I'm hoping that in the next few days we can open the door to the diningroom and let the cats out, and we can stop having to go outside to get from one part of the house to another. Sure will be nice when we can do that..hehe.

Re: Floor

I had to look at your original post to see which rooms and think about the layout. You do have to go have the house cut in half don't you.

If you have the computer room, and the front bedroom being done - how do you get to the bathrooms? Or are you not doing the computer room.... that must be the 3rd that is not being done.

Just trying to remember the layout..

Re: Floor

Fenyx, if you will remember, the house is kind of split down the middle. There is a front room, middle room, bedroom and main bathroom on one side, our bedroom, diningroom, kitchen and utility room on the other side.

The rooms we did are our bedroom and the front room, which is the room we are using as the computer room/den now. That is the room that has the door that goes out onto the big porch. The rooms to be done are the middle room, diningroom, and that back bedroom. We are not doing anything to the bathrooms or the kitchen/utility room. I will eventually get new linoleum for the kitchen/utility room, but that's for sometime down the road a bit.

As for getting to the bathroom, or other rooms, it has been a bit comical, if not irritating. I have 3 doors that go to the outside. The door that goes to the big porch was off limits. While the floor was being sanded, the door into the diningroom was closed and taped off, and the door into the middle room was closed and taped off.
Ok...so you can get an idea of how my house works.....
With the diningroom door closed, it closes off the diningroom, kitchen and utility room. To get to those you use the back door. With the middle room door closed, it closes in the middle room (the livingroom, or TV room as we call it), the main bathroom and the back bedroom. To get to those, you have to use the side door. So, if you are watching TV and want something from the kitchen, you had to go out the side door, around the house to the back door and in...or visa versa. All 3 cats have been locked up in the diningroom, kitchen/utility area since early this past Friday morning. Their food and water bowls and the litter box are all in there, so it made sense to put them in there. NOW, thankfully, we can go through the diningroom door to the kitchen, but the cats are still to be locked up until Saturday when the floors have had enough time to cure.
We will begin putting furniture back in the rooms a week after that.
I just have to hope that we don't have too many windy nights. Since DH and I are sleeping in our poor delapidated pop-up camper, the wind seems worse than it probably actually is, so it makes it extremely difficult to sleep. I'm a bit tired today...hehe. Only a week and 2-3 days left of sleeping in the camper.

Here in a bit, I'm going to wash down the baseboards in the front room and we'll put a coat of stain on them, then put one coat of polyurethane over that. I'll also do the door frames. We'll eventually get this place looking really spiffy!!! Even if it's not ours. We don't plan on moving unless we have no choice in the matter....we like where we are, so, why not do things to make the house better? Landlord is paying us back for the supplies we bought. Can't beat the deal!

Fenyx, did the room break-down help any at all?

Re: Floor

Well, we are finally back in our own bed, in our bedroom. The floors are done in those 2 rooms, and we have our bedroom walls painted and curtains up, pictures on the walls, and finally, after a year or so, I have my armoir back in my room. YIPPEEE!!!

House has been in a total uproar..that's why I've not been online. My computer has been snowed under with stuff all over it! More about that in a new thread.
