\Melons

DH got our first canteloupe, or melon of any kind, yesterday. It needed just a few more days to ripen a bit more, but ohhh it was soo good, and sweet.
We have a volunteer watermelon vine that has quite a few melons on it. Shouldn't be too long before we get one or 2 from it as well.

YUM YUM

Woohooo!

I love melons and don't get enough of them - alas, they don't grow well here.

We grew some year before last, but grubs got them all. I think we have some melons in containers growing this year.

I plan on freezing some so I don't lose a lot like we did last year. Come on over, Firle, I'll share!! You too, muladzh!! And anyone else...we can just make a camping deal out of it and stuff ourselves on garden goodies! LOL

My wife would be over for fresh melon in a heartbeat!! If we lived closer that is emoticon

I honestly do not think I've ever had melon that wasn't bought at a store..... probably why I've never cared for it much.
I would love to get my hands on a couple heirloom variety melons to try!

I like watermelon, but I REALLY like canteloupe and honeydew. We don't have any honeydew in the garden. At least not that I'm aware of..lol.

You should try to plant one plant Curious, just to see if there is enough of a difference for you.

If we lived in a warm enough climate I would devote a whole garden space just to melons emoticon

The short growing season is the problem up here. Once we get our homestead I'll experiment with growing some using row covers for the first month.... that should give the plant enough time I would think....

As it is, my peppers are a total loss this year due to extended cold weather, my 'maters are only going to give me about a 10th of what I had hoped for, my squash may not produce anything after all. The joys of life in the North Country emoticon

Ouch! Sorry to hear that some of your stuff just didn't make it. I'm over-run at the moment. I just put another 93 ears of corn in the freezer, and our 'maters are going nuts. I see about 7 more canteloupes that need to be cut and frozen, and some butternut squash I have to figure out what to do with.

I told DH that if he even THINKS of putting in a garden this big next year I was going to beat him! LOL

We have WAY too many melons right now. Even with 18 CSA shares and 5 of us eating all we can, we are still freezing a bunch. Cantaloupe sorbet is becoming the usual dessert around here!
