Tomato, Tomahto....

Yeah, got a lot of those too!! I decided to try to make my own diced tomatoes to use in soups and chili. I put, of course, tomatoes, diced bell pepper, hot banana pepper, onion and 4 tsps of salt together. It made 8 pints. Some didn't seal, so as soon as I get done here, I have to go and re-heat those that didn't seal. I may have put them in the hot water bath a bit too long. I'll knock it down time wise and see if that helps. I had no recipe, I just tossed stuff together! Hope it comes out like I think it will!!!

Thanks, Corbin. I'll find out one night this week. I plan on making some chili...so we'll see emoticon

I can't imagine my tomatoes just now beginning. I'm so over the whole garden thing right now...LOL

Edited to add: DH and I put up 17 pints of tomato juice a few days ago. Hardly put a dent in the tomato harvest. I think tomorrow I'll be skinning tomatoes and canning tomato chunks for stews, soups, etc.

Our tomatoes have stopped for the summer. Too hot to set fruit. The plants will struggle through until cooler days in the fall and then reward us for caring for them through the heat by another cropping of delicious maters! emoticon

Out of all the tomatoes we planted, today we got the only two tomatoes fit to eat. I reckon we will not be trying to grow 'em next year.

muldzh, try a potted tomato plant rather than one in the ground. Use a good top soil for the base and some kind of nutrient soil for the top and go for it. My dad actually used a child's plastic swimming pool for his tomatoes this year, and he got a lot.
Sometimes container gardening is better if you have soil problems, or critter problems. Just a thought emoticon

Thank you Saijen - we had come to that conclusion ourselves recently - everything that we did grow in a container is doing really well - most of the ground planted stuff is failing badly. IT would seem that a lot of this ground is very chemically dirty - oil and other such muck.. so next year, if we do not relocate to a chunk of land in Texas, we will do ALL container planting.
