Urban Farms in Havanna
I just stumbled over this article (and short video) on the BBC website:
The vegetable gardeners of Havanna
I think this is a great example for the world. It's labor-intense, low-energy farming which helps a much healthier life-style than in most other countries.
They really took the bad and made something highly interesting out of it.

Re: Urban Farms in Havanna
Wow, that's so neat!
It's unfortunate that is seems humans have to truly crash before they develop good systems like that. There are so many things buoying the American economy (as bad as it is) that this sort of revolution is not likely to happen. It sure would be amazing if it did though!
Thanks for the link!

This is really neat. Just sorry that things had to get to the point they did before they started this.

Re: Urban Farms in Havanna
I do wish this would happen in more cities around the world. The food would be better, fresher and big agro would have less of a market.
Ah, well.

Re: Urban Farms in Havanna
Scotland used to have urban farming, on a small scale - many of the large towns and cities had areas in high population neighborhoods that were available for the locals. In the eighties though, commerce bought up a lot of the land used, and made money out of it. The renters of the allotments had no say in it, and lost a valuable food source.
