Traditional Thanksgiving is upon us.....
Do any of you have favorite traditions, foods, etc. that you do during this time?
We USED to have a huge family gathering, with the turkey, dressing/stuffing, hords of veggies of various types, the usual fare, but over the last several years, DH and I have come to enjoy just the 2 of us going out to eat (no cooking, no clean up), then spending the rest of the day curled up watching movies or reading, sleeping (usual Thanksgiving activity...lol), or sometimes we may just take a drive....see the foliage.
This year, we are going to my HPS's (something I now wish I'd not agreed to, simply because I really do enjoy the quietness of it being just my DH and me....oh well). She's going to do the bulk of the cooking....the turkey, dressing and all of that. I'm going to make a sweet potato casserole (I'll put the recipe in the Kitchen) and may do some deviled eggs, not sure on that one. Her daughter is going to do the standard green bean casserole (that has the dried onions and mushroom soup in it). I will probably do either a pecan pie, sweetpotato pie or cheesecake....DH doesn't like pumpkin pie.
The HPS and her family have a tradition that, after the meal, her hubby gets the Christmas lights up outside, and she starts getting her Christmas decorations out and putting things up. To me, that's just way too early, but that's me...lol. I usually don't do Christmas decorating until about 2 weeks before Christmas, then it stays up till the day after my birthday (Jan3). There's a supposed superstition that if you leave your tree up until after the first of the year, you'll have good luck all year. Well, so far that's not worked for me, so this year, I may take it down right after Christmas...lol. See if that makes a difference.
Anyway....what are some of the traditions you and your families do, or want to incorporate this year?

Re: Traditional Thanksgiving is upon us.....
Thanksgiving has always been the biggest holiday for my family. A lot of the time, we take a family vacation somewhere - usually something simple but sometimes extravagant. In recent years, we've rented a house boat (on the lake right down the road), a vacation house in a small town 30 minutes away, gone to Salt Lake to see my mom's family, but the best one was last year. We stayed in a traditional hacienda in central Mexico in a town of about 3,000 people in the middle of nowhere! The food was all so fresh and wonderful. We rode horses (and were even displayed in a parade!), went hiking in the mountains everyday and watched school soccer games in the field next to the hacienda. It was awesome!
As far as food goes, my family is mostly vegetarian so we don't do the big turkey. When we've had more extended family, someone has brought a turkey, but usually there's just some ham or something small instead of a whole bird. My favorite is homemade cranberry sauce! We also make dressing and mashed potatoes. The rest of the food changes from year to year. But my mom always makes pumpkin ice cream if we are at home. Yummmmmm!

Re: Traditional Thanksgiving is upon us.....
I have 3 sisters so we will divide up the cooking each of us doing our own favorite the turkey, stuffing, corn, peas, mashed potatoes, my sweet potatoes and mom's pumpkin pie yum. Oh and cranberry sauce lol
I will watch the Macy parade I am a giant kid.
Other than that it just a day for the extended family to get together.
I will rerun the day the Sunday after for my husband's side and split cooking duty with our eldest daughter.
My tree will go up December 6th, tradition my mom started to recognize St Nichols and will stay up until January 6th little Christmas. The days no longer have the same meaning but it feels right.

Re: Traditional Thanksgiving is upon us.....
Holiday plans are shaping up! My sister-in-law has several family members coming in and we all get along great, so it should be a big party! The only part that is bumming me out is that my boyfriend is going out of town to visit his family . But this is his once a year trip back home, so I can't really be too upset!

Re: Traditional Thanksgiving is upon us.....
I can't have Thanksgiving without pies. Pumpkin pie made with less sugar and more squash and egg than typical so that it is a thick custard. We also spice it different, we skip the cloves, and add a tiny scant 1/8 teaspoon of cayenne pepper.
Pecan Black Walnut pie. 1/2 cup black walnuts and 1 and a 1/2 cups pecans per pie, not like restaraunts where its all about the syruppy sugar gel with 1 or 2 half pecans laid on top.

Re: Traditional Thanksgiving is upon us.....
Firle...start your own tradition if you want. You may be surprised at how it catches on...
Ranting, my hubby doesn't like pumpkin pie, so I don't even bother. I like it, but really prefer apple pie, or cheesecake. I'm a bit weird...lol. He likes pecan pie, and I like that one you mentioned, but without the walnuts...I don't like walnuts. And I agree..the store bought pecan pies are all about the goo.....gimme more nuts!!! I've not made a pecan pie in ages. May have to consider it this year....
