income tax
I am annoyed.. bad thing for me to be annoyed, but what the heck.
The county I reside in has the highest county tax in IN, and has some pretty illegal ways of assessing - on 12/24/08 the tax rate was 2.6% and that was what I had calculated the 2008 taxes on. On 1/13/09 I saw the tax rate at 3.4%, but as year end was 2.6% I paid that amount.
They have demanded another couple of thousand dollars because they say there new rate is the one I have to pay for the whole of 2008!!**!!
That is criminal - you pay tax at the rate demanded, when earned... not some figure they come up with the next year.. thieving little nasties. I have set a lawyer onto the matter, so I don't do anything nastily magical on 'em. GRRRRR

Re: income tax
Tax, tax, tax. It does all seem rather evil, but it is the way we get all the wonderful things we enjoy (schools, roads, libraries, wars...oh wait, sorry, not that one...). I have a sinking suspicion that the laws are purposely written vaguely just so they can do things like that.
For county taxes here, my property tax went up 9.9% last year...yup, in the middle of the real estate crisis, my home value is suddenly far more than what I paid for it. Sigh. Went to the appeals and because it was less than the maximum allowed (10%) and the house next door sold for $550,000, I was out of luck. Ah well.

Re: income tax
We use to be outside of the city limits and therefore was not subject to the taxes - we got annexed - the trade for doubling of property taxes - home, car, etc. is that we get 10 ambulances oppose to just one when we call 911 - that is it.
Nothing new or worth wild - apparently the city needed more money to opperate and annexed where it could.
As to better schools, roads, etc. Not very likely. Here in NC education is the primary thing being cut - reduction in necessary staff - teachers, ADHD ranglers, behavioral specialist done away with, etc. Classroom material budgets cut, salaries for those staying is being reduced by 2%.
As to road ways - again lots of pot holes but no fixing n the near future. I would love to know where the tax money is going since it is apparently not to schools, roads, etc. I pay for 911 emergency vehicles - with insurance, and cash - so the state/city is not funding that either. Could go on, but it seems that something money is going somewhere else other than the community's needs.
Our local VA is losing some of its offerings for vets as well - they are redirecting funds from medical necessity for vets into other areas. So now those vets will have to go to other local hospitals that change them or travel longer distances for medical care. Either way they are now paying for the medical care they earned when they went to war/joined the services to safeguard us.

Re: income tax
I don't benefit from good roads, or schools that I don't have kids for, or policing - I don't have access to a library worth visiting, I have my own well, that I maintain, and my own septic system, again that I maintain. I never use the roads they want to repair, because I live too far away from them. If taxes were assessed by actual use, I would have no tax bill.

Re: income tax
I also don't have kids in school, but would prefer that if I have to be taxed, that my taxes did go to help the school system. Teachers are sooo underpaid and I hate seeing so many programs being cut, especially programs for kids with learning disabilities. It's hard enough to find teachers for those classes, but to try to put those kids into mainstream is a huge mistake for many. (This coming from a woman who was a sub teacher for LD classes).
As for income taxes, mine aren't taxed since it is on disability, but DH's are, only federally. Tennessee has no state income tax. Taxes for roads, etc come from sales tax and wheel tax here. When I lived in Alabama, I paid $27 for my car tag every year. Here, I pay $51 because there is a wheel tax here. Our sales tax is 9.75% in this county. I don't know what percentage our landlord pays for property taxes, but it's a bit, only because of the 'improvements' on the property. 2 houses and multiple out buildings. Even if we tear down the old smoke house and rebuild one a bit larger, his property tax will go up some, just for that one actual improvement. Kind of silly if you ask me.
