The Story of Edgar Sawtelle AND Dewey the Library Cat

These are two separate books.

I'm midway through Edgar Sawtelle and I just love it. It's not a fast paced story but it's holding me. It's about a mute boy whose family raises a fictional type of dog -- Sawtelle dogs. There's an amazing ghost scene in the book. Really, not much has happened yet -- the boy's father dies, the father has a questionable brother who is now courting the boy's mother, the boy is conflicted and angry about it all. It's just that it's so well written that it's holding me. There are even occasional parts in a dog's point of view, and well done.

I just got Dewey the Library Cat from the library emoticon It promises to be a tear jerker, for me! It's the true story about a cat who was found in the library drop box of an Iowa library, and became the library mascot. It's also the memoir of the author, who came to love and bond with the cat. I won't let that one get back to the library without reading it. emoticon

How did you like Edgar Sawtelle? My mom has been drudging through it for some weeks now. She says it has really gotten her upset and brought up dark deep emotions at times and she's had to put it down for extended periods. She hasn't told me much because she knows that I like to read books that I know nothing about, but she did mention that there was some animal violence (I think dogs that got into a fight) and she had a hard time reading it. What did you think?

hmmm...I'll try not to say anything actually about the plot. I did like it, though it was a slow read at times. I really liked the feeling of the landscape. It took place in rural and forested Wisconsin and I could just feeel myself in the landscape -- and I love when an author does that well. I also really really really loved the depth of the bond between the main character (the boy) and the dogs. I thought those details were well done. And I loved the first ghost scene (I love a good ghost scene). It was strange -- it was a long read, there was some slogging through for me, and yet, I couldn't put it down. And the ending -- I wish it had been different.

Madness, how do you find the time to do all you do? (thread drift emoticon I haven't made time to do any reading lately. Soo busy with cat emergencies and other work. Tell me your secret!

My mom feels the same way about the book I think - she keeps telling me it's just dragging on and she might just stop reading it. But then the next time I talk to her, she's still at it! She says she's gotten to a point now where she has to finish it.

Ah, I don't think I do too much - just the things I do, I try to make have a big impact! I listen to audio books on my walk to work, so that's an hour of reading a day. A typical books takes me 2 weeks or less to read - I usually listen while weeding the garden as well. I read text at night too - so I have two books going at once. I can't "read" two books because I get confused, but when one of them is in a different voice, I can keep them straight!

But the main secret...don't watch TV! When I get in the habit, my productivity plummets completely! I find that I get drawn into it and even if I just mean to watch one show, I end up plopped on the couch for the rest of the evening. I didn't have a TV until my husband moved in a year ago for just that reason.
