Re: Why?
Woah, that's a scary story! So many ticks would have made me shudder.
Glad you got their numbers down, even though you still have to work on control. All the best for more improvement.

Re: Why?
Ugh, ticks are the worst! They can literally suck the life out of an animal! I wouldn't have hesitated to use chemical warfare in the beginning either. Bleh.

Re: Why?
<shudders in horror>
There's no way I could live where there were that many ticks. One of many reasons I'm well suited for the frozen north We do have them up here but not anything like that! Think I find maybe a dozen a year between all of us and the dog and we spend most of our time outdoors during the warmer months.

Re: Why?
Yuck -- ticks! We live in tick country, though we are also in the north. We found that our chickens really seem to make a difference in the tick population, even though we don't free range them when the garden is in (but our growing season is (too) short.)

Re: Why?
Ticks respond satisfactorily to a mix made from the oils of Neem, peppermint, oregano and olive. We mix it with apple cider vinegar, water and a small amount of natural detergent(from tree sap) Spray this pleasant smelling, biodegradable non chemical mix onto the area with ticks, and they don't survive long - animals cannot be harmed by it, and it stops snails and flukes too. I have no idea why it works, but my family has used it for a long long time, with apologies to the ticks, and thanks to the Green Lord.

Re: Why?
muladzh, that's a great remedy if you have a small place to protect, but for us, we'd never get it all covered. We are on a bit over 100 acres, and 2 of our dogs run all over the place. Perhaps spraying the dogs down would help some. Not sure how my Chow would take to that, though.
We had a lot of deer ticks and some really small black ticks here....I'm guessing they are a type of seed tick...they look almost like a watermelon seed, but smaller. We de-tick the dogs as often as they will let us. The chow LOVES it when we de-tick him. He'll stand sooo still for us, then he wants to sniff and nibble at the tick. The tick gets it's head chopped off and thrown away!!

Re: Why?
Ugh, ticks.
OK, back on topic.
Pook's Hollow was going to be the name of my farm, when we had a house that was in a hollow.
I've always loved stories about Puck and Puccas (or Pooka), and "Poc" is "goat" or "buck" in Gaelic. There are all kinds of place names in England along the theme of Pook's Hill or Puxhill, but no Pook's Hollow, so I thought it would be different.
Then we moved, our house is up on a hill, so I went to Half Caper Farm for my herd name - Half Caper is a move in Morris dancing, Caper is derived from the Latin word for "goat" - "Capra" - and I raise Nigerian Dwarf goats! (among others )

Re: Why?
Huh, I never connected "caper" with goat! But boy now that I see the common connection, I not only see that goats caper (jump about, dance, etc) but they also can find themselves in some interesting capers (crimes!)

Re: Why?
Very interesting, Pooks. I've often wondered how you came by your nic. Now I know!
And I learned some things in the process other than the initial stuff I asked for... very cool!!!

Re: Why?
The way I was taught to use craft names was that they had three basic purposes. One was to transform you, one was to help switch from your more mundane persona (which has its own uses), and one was to give you a name seperate from your legal name (for most of the reasons it is good not to use your legal name online.)
So, on pagan boards I end to use my craft name. I've tried using other ones and they just feel too hokey for me. No real resonance. I can't think of myself by that name.
I recieved Debbrah when I initiated. It is part of the adoption into the line sort of aspect of it-your parents get to name you. I have to admit I was a little disappointed at first (it is a rather bland/normal name, even if you are expecting something "normal" enough to be able to use anywhere.) After I got to know the name better, however, it fit. It really does express where I feel like I am going. And by using it on boards like this, I feed it.
--- For good or ill, luck and opportunity are 90%+ preparation...
