If you did that in SA, you would be charged with murder, even if the guy was genuinely invading your home.

I don't think that people as kind and decent as either of you would actually be able to 'shoot to kill'. You're not killers, not either of you!

On a lighter note, I saw an episode of Boston Legal in which Denny Crane shoots a mugger in the feet (and the knee).

See it here.

I can't see it in SA, but you might be able to. We thought it was very funny.

It's not going to happen but I can quote several people I know who used to say that until they were actually faced with the situation.
But personal history is not science. It would be interesting to see if there are any statistics on it.

From a psychological point of view. One of the reasons that recruits in the army are isolated for months before they are actually sent out into the battlefront is because the army has to undo the natural inability to kill another human.
We are not, or rather people who are psychologically healthy, are not 'wired' to kill. It's not that we're taught it's wrong, we just instinctively know it's wrong. If a child is able to kill an animal without compunction, any child psychologist would see red flags going up because that child is a potential serial killer.
Potential, not actual!
And it is for this reason that new recruits have to be 'brainwashed' into being able to override this.
If you know the story of Patton, he was disgraced because he slapped a soldier who was taken off duty because he was appalled by the killing. We are naturally appalled by the killing of another human.
I say again, no matter what the incentive, I doubt if either of you would actually 'shoot to kill' maybe shoot to injure but even then, your brain would cause you to shake so badly you'd do nothing other than injure, no matter how mad you were.
Just an opinion. I'd like to see if anyone has actually done a study on people who were faced with a situation and either could or couldn't kill and a psychological work-up of both sides.

It would depend on a lot of factors Mo but I believe if it was them or me or someone I cared for I would have no trouble at all. I've taken the courses on handling my firearm, am rated "marksman" so I can actually aim first and I keep my guns at the ready.

Of course if they came between me and my morning coffee they are dead men!

That's funny.
I don't think I could do it, even if I wanted to but that's me the ultimate pacifist.

Re: guns in school?

I let hubby read this section and when he read what MO wrote about me being able to kill someone who was hurting me or mine...........even before he read my response. He said...."I've seen your temper, you could do it in a heartbeat. Especially if they were hurting Chris (our son)!"
He's right......I do have a temper. I control it pretty well now, but when I was younger......I easily took my anger out on those who deserved it, without any qualms or even thinking twice. ( I have a broken nose and two broken knuckles to prove it!)
And I have been through the Hunters Safety courses, and hunted and shot animals..........as well as I'm pretty darned good at skeet and trap shooting.
So, if my temper/fear was up......I'm a good enough shot to kill someone without blinking.
Although......hubby also added........."that more than likely, due to where we have to keep the weapon...it's more likely I'd kill the "bad guy" using the giant butcher knife in the holder on the counter." emoticon He ain't wrong! emoticon

No, I couldn't do that. emoticon

I'd probably sit him down and give him a long lecture about what his mother and grandmother would think, while he sticks a knife in me.

I simply couldn't do it. I'd rather talk it through than fight.
