Cute Erika.

why it was staring at and came back to it again

I cut the sound out on the video because the dogs were barking their heads off and my cleaning lady was calling out at it and there was just general mayhem going on in the background.
It was staring at the gate, trying to figure out how to get through the barrier, gave up tried the wall at the side and then came back again, gave an almighty bash at the gate and broke through.
I didn't have the video going at that point because I was trying to deal with the hysteria inside the house. Also it could be that some of the material I edited out, including the video going off to the side because of being pushed around by the hysterical masses, so I don't really know why it looks like that.
But because I think animals are cleverer than we give them credit for, it probably couldn't take the racket coming from the house either, decided to look for another way out, found there were more two-legged animals behaving badly there as well and then came back to bash its way to the silence of the cane fields. As simple as that. I don't think that it noticed the gnome because they see everything in a shade of gray anyway, so it would've looked like part of the general environment to him anyway.

No doubting we are glad you pulled the sound given that information. emoticon
Pigs are very intelligent animals and I have not checked to ask them if they can see a color so probably true as is the case in most animals. Their depth perception is usually also hindered as well. They do have a great ability to see movement readily, and also shapes that just do not fit seems to alert their attention. The nose is the pigs biggest asset. Pigs are used to sniff out what man can not, and other animals fail. It is funny to see it appear to look at that gnome for an answer for the issue at hand more than once. Had you said there was no reason other than that, I would have said lose the gnome. All wild animals have a better sense of issues than we have. We have dulled ours, increasing reliance on technologies.

Don't worry, as part of my downsizing, the garden ornaments are going to the local nursery school. Little kiddies love them so all the gnomes, fairies and pixies will have a happier place to live than with a boxer who thinks they are chew toys!

What about it? Should start noticing increasing shortages of almost everything consumable soon. Coffee and sugar I thought would go hand in hand, bottled I was expected to follow behind it. Non perishable foods like dry goods, aka rices & nuts, will be seen soon also. There is no shortage, I hope you know that. You/we will just be finding those and similar items to follow.
Prices are fixing to sky rocket on many food items. I expect certain types of clothing to also becoming hard to find and over priced when you do.
Fuel oils will be jumping soon along with batteries. This is just not getting started.
Jan, I expect this ball will begin to roll down hill fast. 6 months after, mid summer, it will be apparent this is not going to cease or slow much ever again.
If you live in an area where you can plant your own personal gardens for some items, you should try. A 5 gallon bucket will produce much yield from a small plant if the soil is rich. It is good for you, not much effort, good practice, cheaper, and you will be having much of what you want fresh non contaminated close at hand. There are only a few good seed sources that have not used chemicals in their products on market, those are the ones to seek. Non chemical, and better packaging/ foil sealed is a better choice by far than plastic and cardboard or paper.

I said more than I need to already for this forum and its genre. When I get moved I have so much work to begin it will be fun for me. I doubt I will be afforded too much spare time after my move, but if I do I will stop in to check on my friends here at Runboard.
Good luck for all in the future.
