Little altar pots

I don't do ceramics seriously - but I like to play around with clay when I get a chance. Here are a few little altar pots I made a couple of months ago...

I've been told it looks like a bracket fungus.

Yeah...kinda, but for some reason, I think of the sea/ocean when I look at it. It would make an awesome censor or smudge pot.

I can't wait until the pottery studio is set up at the farm. I haven't done any ceramics since high school but I really liked it.

Good work there Corbin! Did you fire them at home or does your school have a kiln?

I have a very, very small test-type kiln at home, which I haven't actually used in years. It's really too small for firing much of a load.

soooo... when I fire the pots in school, I sometimes sneak some of my own in.

I really like pottery also - clay is such a nice material to work with. If I didn't already have more things to do than I had time for, I'd spring for a bigger kiln and do a lot more pottery. But, as it is, every time I start playing around with clay, I start looking at kilns in catalouges. I have to say "No, Corbin, no. Bad Corbin. Bad boy..."

Yeah, I have to remind myself of my time limitations too when I start getting crazy ideas in my head! Its kinda annoying right now - work is REALLY slow but I still need to sit around here all day because the experiments need to be babysat. So I end up goofing off online when I could be doing something more productive. Ok, ramble, ramble!

Somehow, our family has accumulated 3 kilns. My brother gave me one and it's sitting in my garage. My mom has one from her old pottery days. And one of the sharecroppers has one too. They are all going to end up at the Sandholler farm soon. But not soon enough! I want to play in the clay! emoticon

Those are very nice! Were they hand-built or thrown?

They're hand built - I used the pinchpot technique, which is fairly easy, and, once you get used to it, you can make a lot of pots fairly quickly. They're not going to be perfectly symetrical, but they can be rustic-nice.

The big drawback opf pinchpots is that you can't make them very large because you have to be able to manipulate the whole thing by cradling it in one hand while you work it with the other.
