Re: Little altar pots oooh, very nice! I like to hand-build stuff. It gives it so much more character, and you can work with it a little more intimately that way. I'd also have to say that it was a very good choice in technique for building altar pots. I don't think they'd have the same feel if they were thrown. However, I still love to throw. My favorite hand-built technique has got to be the coil though, but only because you can so easily embed spirals into it! ....I know you guys haven't seen much of my work yet, but you'll learn that I love spirals!
Clay is a really nice media to work with. I agree with you about getting your hands in there and pushing and pulling it into forms. There's something inherently pleasurable in directly manipulating material with your hands - not that tools aren't nice, but clay lets you be so immediate .
I never really got very good on the wheel. It looks so easy when somebody with some experience uses it, but it is pretty tricky to learn. But then, you can do some very nice work with it, and it can be pretty quick, too.
- I'm going to sneak over to TexasM's house and steal a kiln.
Re: Little altar pots I would love to have a really small kiln and some good pottery clay to make some things.
When I lived in New Orleans back in 1975-76, the place I was at had a seperate house that housed cermacis stuff, including a kiln. It was all stuff you used slip and molds for though...no clay to work with your hands. I spent a lot of time in that house, molding, painting, etc. It was a lot of fun.
Sorsha, I also love spirals They're pretty evident in some of my fractal art.
