Fold Forming - a new to me technique - very cool!

I've been dying to try a metal working technique called "Fold Forming" for a long time becuse the examples I've seen are so interesting. When you look at some of these things, it's as if the metal was used like clay to make incredibly complex forms. It always seemd like it would be cool to learn, but very difficult...

Well, I finally gave it a shot.

The very first time I tried it, I realized that, not only was easier than things I've been doing for year, but it is also so versitile that I can now easily create almost any kind of form I can imagine!

Here's an example of a form I made up:

This thing is about three quarteers of an inch long. I've made up a few more and used them to make some nifty earrings.

Here are some other earrings I made using this technique -

And this pair of earrings is the one that everybody is complimenting me on:

They're based on this guy's horns:

I think this is the coolest metalworking technique I have ever learned. Anybody who wants to work with metal should learn it!

I think you mentioned you had a book on it. What's the title? Or are there good websites? One of these days I will have time at the forge...

The book is called "Fold Forming" by Lewton-Brain. If you want a signed copy, Lewton-Brain sells them from his website:

http://www.brainpress.com/Foldforming.html

...but he charges $17 for shipping and handling. You cn also get it from Amazon, unsigned, for the same base price, but normal shipping and handling charges. It's a beautiful book, with excellent photographs a real art book. I kind of regret that I didn't spring for the signed copy.

There is also a link on his website to articles he's written on the Ganoskin website. But the book is really the way to go...

Check out the prices he's asking for his work... emoticon . Must be nice...

Yeah, must be nice!

And that's right, I think you linked that site before...or perhaps I just googled it. Cool stuff on there! My dad's birthday is in October. Might be a perfect present for him - and then I can look at the book too! emoticon

Mark the pages that have good stuff on them before you give him the book. Remember, you have birthdays too, and you don't want dad to have to think too hard about what to get you...

So here are some more fold forms I've been playing with:

Dragon's Claw Earrings (I wanted to call these The Claws of Satan, but since I'm pagan and don't have a Satan, I had to settle for the dragon...):

A set of earrings and necklace based on a Crow's feathers:

And these earrings are based on one of the more elegant forms from nature, the curled up fiddlehead ferns:

And, finally, these Autumn Leaves earrings:
