The running deer is so nice! I bet those are a lot more comfortable to wear than all-metal cuffs...

Yeah - I used the red felt to put some color behind the pierced work, but it turns out that they are also extremely comfortable.

They can be snug (I don't wear much jewelry myself, but I don't like loose things on my arms and hands, so I'm imagining that others don't either), without feeling "hard" - they feel more like an article of clothing.

It's a trick I picked up from looking at the way armour was made.

The next step should be armor. Metal bracers. The Ren Fair types would go crazy for that. emoticon

Well, I'll tell ya...

You know how much I love armour...

And I've got an excellent book Techniques Of Medieval Armour Reproduction: The 14th Century (Medieval & Renaissance) by Brian Price.

I keep thinking about it --- I'm going to play around with some sheets of steel to see what I can do with them, and hopefully, sometime soon, I'll try making a pair of gauntlets.

Steel bracers might be a good way for me to transition into using steel... The forming isn't that complicated - I'd be using the same tools as I use for copper and brass, just a bit more force...

hmmm...

Thanks, Chadlove - that does seem to be the most popular one, from comments I've gotten in the places I've posted it. Personally, I prefer the ones with oxides on them (verdigris green is one of my favoirte colors), but I seem to be outvoted... emoticon .

The deer is very pretty, but my favorite is the first one,
The Wyvern. I love the colors, and the design!

Have you ever tried chain? I've a couple of friends who made amazing stuff out of it (one made a bikini-like outfit fit for the cover of a pulp fantasy novel....)

Mixed with pieces like this it could be a VERY impressive step into armour with minimal equiptment. (I think they just had wire, a coil jig one had devised that attached to a drill, wire cutters and pliers.)

I've played around with it a little bit. One of the pieces I am currently working on incorporates a bit of chain mail in the design. You can make some lovely things with it - I teach it in my jewelry class, but, the truth is, working with all those tiny links is too repetitive fro me. I'd go crazy(er) in about a week...

Still... it has a lot of possibilities...

I have a very nice book called Chain Mail Jewelry: Contemporary Designs from Classic Techniques by Terry Taylor and Dylon Whyte which has some great ideas and a nice photogallery in it.
