The next step should be armor. Metal bracers. The Ren Fair types would go crazy for that.

Have you ever tried chain? I've a couple of friends who made amazing stuff out of it (one made a bikini-like outfit fit for the cover of a pulp fantasy novel....)
Mixed with pieces like this it could be a VERY impressive step into armour with minimal equiptment. (I think they just had wire, a coil jig one had devised that attached to a drill, wire cutters and pliers.)
