Etching technique - Copper Earrings

The current jewelry projects I am working on all require some etching of the metal, so I'm playing around with etching in order to get a handle on the technique. Here's what I've come up with so far -

First, a couple of abstract designs:

A leaf:

To ward off the evil eye:

An abstract dragon:

The sun:

Bugs:

The technique I used for these is very simple, and can be done with little besides some salt water and a D-cell battery. I shot some pictures while I was working, and, when I can get around to it, I'll describe and demonstrate the technique in the Tips section...

Hey, I love Chad too! Uh...probably a different Chad though...at least I hope....Chad is my husband! emoticon

Great etching Corbin! I've yet to use that technique for any kind of art, but I did learn how to etch metals at school for microscopic inspection in metallurgy classes!

And did you invite innocent and naive young men up to your room to look at your etchings?

This is a little bit of a joke with my wife and I because when I was in college, I was doing art etchings, and I did actually invite her up to my room to look at my etchings...

...You were probably using acids to do the etching for metallurgy. This technique is so easy to do without the nasty chemicals I think pretty much anybody could have fun with it at home emoticon .

Yep, most of the time it involves some sort of acid.

You sly devil, you! "Want to see my etchings?" Was that the hot pickup line back then? emoticon

No - the hot pickup line back then was "What's your sign, Baby?" but I could never get beyond the first "s" with a staight face (women don't seem to be attracted to men who giggle and snort), so I had to use the etching thing emoticon .

And thanks, Saijen. Now that I have a grasp on etching, I can complete those bigger pieces I've been talking about for the past three months...

I gotta get those done. They're starting to take up too much space in the lab...

Can't wait to see the larger pieces that you end up etching! I know they'll be exquisite!

I'm at what I call "The Hesitation Point." I've got everything ready - all I have to do is the etching, then completing them is a piece of cake. But if I screw that up, the whole thing is ruined. So I kind of stop - until I can get the momentum up again.

The etching isn't really hard, but still, you know... emoticon

However, I do hereby solemnly swear that I will work on them this weekend, with Bob as my witness!

(but I'm also drawing a dragon... dang it! To much fun to be had, and not enough time to have it...)
