Why doesn't anyone want critiques?
I'm sort of sad this part of the forum is so barren. This is the part of the other art forums I frequent (Epilogue.net and ConceptArt.org) that have the most activity. And I'm learned and grown so much from those critiques, paintovers, etc.
Come on guys. . . . Lets grow! Let me see your stuff. Lets get better together!

Re: Why doesn't anyone want critiques?
I am brand new here, just a lurker so far, I did post two of my new kitties in the fairy contest.
As to why no critiques, I have posted in other places in the past looking for critiques, but never really received anything other than, "it's nice".... I have tried several times on several different forums. I think people do not like to say anything at all that might discourage a new or even old painter, sculptor...
I would really like to have critiques, as I am brand new at painting,( I have been sculpting in porcelain for over 16 years) and I have no formal training at all, I have just taught myself. I want to learn and grow as you said, but then, I am also scared of what real artists may think, I know that it silly, but that is how I feel,
So critique! I have been told that my digitally enhanced background ruins my painting.

Re: Why doesn't anyone want critiques?
Sorry so slow in replying -- I haven't been around much lately.
I am happy to provide a critique for your painting.
I don't see a problem with the background, with the exception that the drawing is very textural, but the background is very smooth. Nothing wrong with mixing digital and traditional, but pick one style -- textural or smooth -- and it will look less cut and paste, and more cohesive.
I like your rendering, but I think you could benefit from more research on cat anatomy to make your drawings more believable. For example, on this piece the cat's skull looks squashed, especially on the right side, which makes it appear very flat.
Also a bit of work on a consistant light source would be helpful. The wings are lit from the left, but the cat from the right. When working like this, combining I'd guess a cat from a reference photo and imagined parts, like the wings, you need to be careful that the "light" hits everything from the same direction, again to make things cohesive and less cut and paste.
And no, it's not to discourage you. Or encourage you that many forums don't critique, people just don't know what to say.
I always suggest Epilogue.net for fantasy artists with thick skin. The critiques can be harsh, but I've learned a lot there. And having the goal of getting at least one piece accepted there is a challenge in itself at times.

Re: Why doesn't anyone want critiques?
Good eye on the lighting issue! I knew something felt "off" but didn't see that at first.
I'm not so sure that the background "ruins" it. Just gives it an entirely different feel. Kinda like clip art. If you are going for a very illustration-type look, that might not be so bad. But if you are looking for more of a "fine art" sort of thing, then yes, it does look cut and paste. The textural difference is the issue - just like Maeveschild said.
The attachment of the wings seems low to me. Of course, having never seen a fairy cat, I can't say for sure. But I would imagine shoulder blade is a good guess!
Sorry I didn't catch this earlier either - easier to see a new thread for each critique.

Re: Why doesn't anyone want critiques?
Wow! I really appreciate those critiques. I never realized about the lighting, I am usually more careful than that! I did not like the shape of the face in this one either, I worked from a photo of one of my cats, but it seemed distorted to me. I think photos are good to work from but they do distort the image some . Again I really appreciate the advice and pointers! Thank you so much!

Always glad to help! I've gotten so much better with help from critiques and I'm happy to share the wealth, as it were.

Re: Why doesn't anyone want critiques?
So does anyone know of a place that will critique art that is not fantasy/sci fi?
I have created some nature/bird paintings that I would really like some input on. I think they are ok, but a couple have issues that I am too close to see. something I can not put my finger on.
I can not express how much your input has meant to me, as I work at home alone. It is nice to find some other artists who are willing to help.
