Start critiquing! Chickadee
I will be out of town on vacation for a little over a week, maybe when I get back I will get some ideas from you all on these. I have more, but I did not want to overload you all, lol. Ok, just one for now, the image thing suddenly is not working for me, and I don't have to time to fuss with it now, so just this one for now...
Yes, this one is out of focus, bad photo!
12 x 16 gouache

Re: Start critiquing! Chickadee
It is a bit hard to critique, since I'm not sure what the painting and what a problem with the photo.
So i guess that's my first critique. I know you're a painter, not a photographer (me too) but you need to find good ways to get decent photos of scans for online viewing. I often try to use natural light and a high megapixel camera with no flash (and take a LOT of pictures) then crop and tint back to natural in photoshop or other manipulation software. Or I use a flat bed scanner, for smaller pieces.
I think it looks a little flat, the background is the same bright saturation as the forground, so it looks like it's all on the same plane -- which makes me expect to see more detail back there.
The only other think I suggest is pushing the tones more -- more bright lights, more darks.
I'd be willing to do a photoshop "paintover" to illustrate what I mean. Let me know!

Yes, adding depth is great for this piece!
Also, depending on what you are trying to convey with the painting, I feel that the subject is a bit small. The paint-over Maeveschild did certainly improves the piece to the point where scale isn't such an issue. But it still seems "off". Either larger bird, or something else to fill in the spaces.

Re: Start critiquing! Chickadee
Wow, I am stunned at the amount of time you took to help me. I am re-working the painting now to incorporate some of the suggestions and changes to the painting.
I cannot express my gratitude for you all to take the time to show me how to improve my art. I am thinking how wonderful it would be if I could find an art instructor to do this all of the time for me.
I am very impressed with not only your willingness to help others, but how different the painting looks with your photoshop tweaking.
I just say wow and thank you!
