Re: Vines
Hope this area isn't limited to professionals
I really like it! At first I was going to say that I wish you would of left the background blank instead of the diagonal fill-in you did (okay, so I don't know technical terms )...... but the more I stared at it I was transported to a covered patio, the trellis is on the edge, the vines just inside..... and outside is a driving rainfall coming in at a slant. Reminded me of my inlaws back patio actually
Anyhow it was strange, at first the background distracted me, but once I was able to accept it as rain, then I was able to ignore it and focus on the vines and the different markings of the trellis. As I said, I really like it.

Re: Vines
Ok...I love the look of the wood used for the trellis. It has a weathered look about it.
The vine itself is awesome, but I have to wonder, if the light it's getting is from above...shouldn't there be some shading on the wood under those large leaves? Even if it's close to the bottom of the piece. There is no real shading to indicate that there is light coming from any direction.....or, is the shading further down and it's not seen? I'm not sure how this is all supposed to work..lol. I can't draw worth 2 toots, so am not real sure about this kind of thing, but it just seems to me it would be more realistic if there were some shadows from the large leaves.
Over all, I really like it, and am jealous that I can't draw worth 2 toots! LOL. Just keep these coming!!!

What! You don't like the little lines in the back! Do you know how long it took me to do those!
Just kidding...
In order to get enough contrast between the bright areas and the middle areas, I had to shade the background to a more even grey. The diagonal lines also are intended to set up visual movement from the upper right hand corner down across the page, in contrast to the up and down movement of the major leaves on the vine.
Now that I've read what you have to say about rain, I see what you mean - actually, rain outside of a patio would have much the same visual effect. Good point.
Saijen, you're right about the shading. Technically, their should be some shadow of the big leaves on the lower half of the trellis. The light is coming from above - you can see the shading on the lower parts of the crossbars on the trellis, and the vine tendrils that are close to the trellis show shadows.
I thought that, if I tried to include the shadow of the leaves, the picture would start to get confused - muddy - with too much going on.
Do you find it visually annoying? now that I look at it with that idea, I'm thinking that I could have put a vague shadow into the lower half of the trellis, which would have increased the contrast in that part of the picture, which, in turn, would have made the lower part of the vine stand out more...
Oh, and P.S. Thanks PerpetuallyCurious and Saijen. I don't know about you, but I find critiqing to be very difficult, and I'm gratful that you took the time and put the effort into it!

Indeed because I tend to like everything. When they have the famous Art On The Rocks show here every summer I go twice. Once with my wife to look at things at her pace (much faster then mine), then I go once by myself because I'll lose myself for hours just admiring everyones ability and techniques!!
If you're ever at a show and see a guy standing in the aisle staring at a work of art for long periods of time, making everyone walk around him...... that's probably me!
Art shows, crafts shows.... I love them all!

Re: Vines
Corbin, critiquing is really hard for me since I can't draw worth spit. I don't know what is supposed to be, what isn't supposed to be, etc. I just know what it is that I like, and what I THINK is right and/or wrong with a piece. If that makes any sense at all! lol....
I do like this piece, though!!!

Re: Vines
Here's my totally belated critique.
I don't doubt this would be hard and scary with ink, but I think you need a bigger range of values. If you shrink it down to thumbnail size, it'd be impossible to see what was going on.
I'd recommend making copies and play around with it, maybe even use some paint to rehighlight areas that might have been left blank as an experiment for more widely ranging values.

Re: Vines
So... to jump right in the deep end with my two cents...
It is very symetrical. I find it a bit static. It is centered and balanced. I don't feel the eye drawn anywhere... it is able to just sit in the middle.
Now, that could be the effect wanted.
