Okay...
So this may have nothing much to do with art, unless you consider film a measure of art. I rented 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' as I didn't have time to go see it in the theater. I recalled that the ads for it had an interesting flavor, but I hadn't seen it. It was extremely long, for starters. I found I had mixed feelings about it, not withstanding that I really could care less who stars in a movie so long as they have convincing characters. Anyhow, two things stood out to me with this movie. One was, it seemed to borrow heavily from the premise of "Titanic" in that you have an old woman recalling her past, and the storyline is based on that past and people and events in it. The circumstances are way different in some ways, but a lot of the pieces match... both women lose their true loves in the end, etc etc. I'd say it is largely a chick flick because it relies so much on dialogue and relationships and emotional gook. Yet for all that, parts of it were stirring, I guess for the empathy one comes to feel for the character. I hope I am not ruining the movie for those who have not seen it. Basic premise: through a series of circumstances, a man is born backward, that is to say, he is born old and gradually becomes young again his lifetime. I had thought this a gruesome idea, but as I said, the film is encumbered with a long story line, somewhat too like Forrest Gump minus the humor.. with the character telling his story as the old woman's daughter reads from this fellow's diary. I still have mixed feelings about the film... I found myself watching to the end even though it was very late, and it was depressing at the end, to me. I can recommend it to those who like a thinking sort of film, where you have to pay attention to follow the story line, but I personally couldn't find myself watching it often... just like I can't make myself watch the "Butterfly Effect" anymore, either. I can't take the added depressive notions and tend to get attached to characters. I wonder if anyone else has watched this movie yet?

Re: Okay...
I would recommend it yes, but be prepared for a long sit. It has enough interesting points to keep you there in front of the screen, but at some points you will wonder why. It was kind of depressing at several points. But the academy awards folks liked it so it must be good, right?
