Re: Sooo... has anybody actually TRIED Absinthe?
Awesome!!! You know, I've never been to Michigan (I've been to 40 states!). That whole grouping right there - Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio. Haven't been to that part of the country at all. Too cold...

Re: Sooo... has anybody actually TRIED Absinthe?
OK, here's the Absinthe report...
The bottle I opened was the French one - La Muse Verte.
The traditional way to drink Absinthe is to dilute it with ice water, poured over a sugar cube or two. For this particular type, I've seen recommendations ranging from 1:3 dilution to 1:4. I found that a higher dilution actually brings out the more subtle flavors of the Absinthe, so that's what I'd recommend. Also, one sugar cube seems to be plenty (I'm not real fond of sweet drinks).
This particular Absinthe has more anise in it than some of the others, and so that's what you notice first - the anise taste. Something like ouzo, but not quite as strong. Then, there is a somewhat bitter aftertaste which is a nice finish to the stronger anise flavor. This is, I guess, from the wormwood.
When you add the water, the Absinthe turns a milky color. This is also due to the anise (ouzo does the same thing). Since the liquid is green, the color is a milky green.
As far as the buzz --- it's hard to say. Alcohol can affect you in different ways, depending on your mood, your company, what you've eaten lately, etc., so although I noticed a difference, I'm not exactly sure what caused it. maybe it was just the alcohol, or maybe not...
What it did seem like was that A. I felt it more than I would normally expect to feel it from just alcohol, and B. I felt like - instead of the blurry, confused feeling that generally comes from alcohol - I felt more focused, and I saw things clearer, more defined.
But I'm not sure. Whatever it was, it was very subtle. I think a person would have to try it for his/her self...
I do recommend drinking it in moderation - one or two glasses would be plenty. This stuff sneaks up on you, so you want to be careful...
Aside from that, I haven't noticed that I'm crazier than usual. And i still have both my ears.
