Recession

I wonder, now that we are inthis financial recession, if the consumer needs for art will vanish. People have less money to spend now, so they are less likely to indulge, I guess. I really hope this is not the case. It used to be, in various cultures, that the artist and writer were upheld and valued. I wonder where out fates lie now.

Re: Recession

Well, from what they're saying on the forums over on Etsy, sales are really, really down. Which is bad...

But, the up side is that, when things pick up again, people will be hungry to buy all thos things that they couldn't buy before.

These recessions come and go - all you can do is hang on during the bad times as best you can, and enjoy the good ones.

When I graduated from college during the 80's, we were in the middle of a recession - the news kept saying it was much worse than the "Great Depression" of the 20's. But it got better, and for the five bad years we ended up with twenty good ones.

It comes and goes...

Re: Recession

My former boss used to always say that jewelry making was the best business to be in.

When women have lots of money, they like to spend it on things like expensive jewelry.

When women DON'T have lots of money, they want to hide it so they buy lots of expensive jewelry.

I think it was more of a reflection of the opinion of his wife rather than the general public! emoticon

Craft shows around here seem to be poorly attended - by the craftsman. Not sure if it's just a give-up attitude or what's going on.

Re: Recession

Well, no money = no supplies to make crafts, which means no potential for profit. With people spending less, it's just not a good gamble to take right now. That's kind of why I am hopeful for design as a career... it's adaptable to many different forms. Now more than ever companies that are still going need ways to convince people to spend. I'd love to do woodwork and such as a job, but it's not real likely I'd survive doing it... I've seen local folks who make furniture have zero luck selling. Of course, the internet is key to a lot wider options for sales, but then you have to deal with shipping and I've seen how complicated it can be to try and ship awkward shaped and sized packages. Locally only UPS does that and they charge an unholy fortune. I've been practicing painting on flower pots again but mainly for my own porch.... I somehow doubt selling these would do well, given they'd likely get broken in shipping and, pretty much planting season is over unless you intend indoor use.. depending on where you are... here it's still hot.
