The 2008-09 Winter Make a Dragon Contest!
Announcing the
2008-09 Winter Make a Dragon Contest!
No entry fees! Nothing you need to buy! You won’t need to tour a time share condo in Central America! And there are real, actual prizes for three talented winners!
The rules are very simple:
1. Make a dragon-inspired creation in any media - draw it, paint it, carve it, forge it, mold it, breed it, genetically manipulate it - whatever you can do. The work must be the original design of the artist, and must be executed by the artist (for example, if you want to show off your new dragon tattoo, you will need to be the one who created the design, and the one who did the tattooing. If you created the design, but didn’t do the tattooing, you can submit the design, but not the actual tattoo).
2. Photograph it, or get the image on the computer somehow.
3. Post it as a NEW TOPIC in The Contenders section under the Winter Make a Dragon Contest heading of The Studio of Secrets. Use your name (either real or screen name) as the subject. In the post you may want to describe the media, actual size, or other details, but the picture is what will be used for judging purposes.
NOTE: To post, you will have to join the forum, but there is no fee, no obligation, and you won’t be buried in spam by doing so (I swear before all that is holy that there are no cheesy tricks being played on you here!).
4. You may submit as many entries as you like, but you can only win ONE prize (that is, you can’t win both first and second prize).
5. All entries must have been completed between December 21, 2008 and March 19, 2009. That’s why it’s the WINTER Make a Dragon Contest. I’m gonna have to trust you on this…
6. Final date for submissions is March 20, 2009, The Studio of Secrets time (see bottom of main page for board time. Depending on where you are, this may be different from your clock time). Winners will be announced on March 29th.
7. The winners will be selected by the friendly and courteous staff of Splendid Fish Studio (that would be me, Corbin, although if I have to make a hard choice I will drag in my wife and kids) who are supplying the prizes and sponsoring this contest.
8. There are three prizes - first, second, and third place.
First prize
is a sterling silver dragon pendant (see picture). This is hand made from nice, heavy, 16 gage solid sterling silver, and is about the size of a silver dollar. It has some nice file work on the wings, and has been patinated to bring out the shape of the wings. As far as value goes… if I were selling this, I’d sell it for $45.
Second prize
is the same design dragon pendant as the first prize, but done in 18 gage brass. It has the same file work on the wings, and the patination process I used has brought out some nice reddish purple color on the wings. If I were selling this, I’d charge about $30.
Here are both together with a silver dollar to give you an idea of the scale:
Third prize is any one item of your choice selected from my Café Press store. To see what’s available, click here: http://www.cafepress.com/splendidfish
The value of the item will depend on what you pick. Items range from about $4 to about $30.
First, Second, and Third prize winners will be permanently enshrined in the Gallery of Grand Masters, and will receive all the pomp and glory that goes along with that title (I have no idea what pomp and glory goes along with that title, but whatever it is, they’ll get it).
Also, everybody who enters will be (Gods willing!) granted the form of immortality of his/her choice, as a special thank you for taking part.
Even if you don’t think you’re the best artist in the world, join in and just have some fun making something. You never know, and there’s nothing to loose except some time spent doing something other than watching TV!

I too experience that whole seasonal mood disorder thingy, but perhaps this project might help bring me out of it! I've been needing an idea for a painting/drawing anyway, so why not?

Re: The 2008-09 Winter Make a Dragon Contest!
Well, this has given me an idea as to what I want to put in the border I've been working on....but I'm not even finished with that! *sigh* Celtic knotwork can be so tedious!

Re: The 2008-09 Winter Make a Dragon Contest!
oh no, I have the border all laid out, though the corners didn't line up quite right, but there's ways around that. I've just learned how to use the grid method, where you draw diamonds and then draw the lines going in between them, so it's like you're drawing the negative space first. The tedious part is filling it all in though! lol! ....I sorta messed it up to begin with though, because it's not exactly even on either side, but it still looks good. I dunno, you'll see it. I figure if I do mess up here and there, it's ok, because it's not the main part of the painting anyway! .....Again, I'm totally not a conventional artist!

Re: The 2008-09 Winter Make a Dragon Contest!
I rather enjoy it....
I don't think I've tried that method, Sorsha Akai. I've done the dots and the grid (the one most of the computer knotweavers are based on.)
Got any links or names I could research to see that method?
