Hello
Hello.
I followed your moderator over from a message board he stopped at and was intrigued.
I am quite possibly the craziest person on this board in that I intend to not only make a living with art, I intend to do quite well with it and have a plan for it. (It does help that I am working with a network of people that have done just that.) It will take a few years before I quit my day job, but it is in the works. Among a few other things I first need to learn to take good pictures of shiny surfaces.
Oh yeah... I also got my BA in Philosophy. If that doesn't prove crazy, nothing will.
I'm 27, pagan, single, am owned by two cats, and have mostly been working on glass and crystal lately. I NEED to get back to wood, but mircosandblasting fits my space well. Woodwork, well done, requires tools and space I don't have. I also want to do more fine metal engraving, but the microscope is number 2 on the list (maybe 3... the utility room sink may be demoted to #2... there is a class on glass carving with the micro-sandblaster that has me drooling....)
I'll likely be an irregular poster... I'm not good about following message boards closely (or checking my email.) I will try to make up for it with sage wit and oddball humour though.

Re: Hello
Say hey, DebbrahF!
Crazy huh? hmmm... Stiff competition around here...
I'm so crazy that I don't think it's at all strange for a person to get a BA in philosophy. At least, not if you're an artist. Somebody's gotta leave the cave sooner or later, and it doesn't look like anybody else is volunteering...
I've seen your glasswork, and can't wait to see some of it posted here - I'm wondering if I should set up a category specifically for glass - it's such awonderful media - it can be industrial or organic, cultured or rustic, and feels like it's made out of light. Luminous to the point of numinosity.
One of the best art exhibits I ever saw was a Dale Chihuly installation a couple of years ago in Kalamzoo (yeah, that's a real place here in Michigan). Included with the package deal was a visit to a glass artists co-op. By the end of it, I was about ready to drop everything and take up glass.
Well, next life, maybe.
Anywayz, don't forget to check out the Make a Dragon Contest, and be sure to post a pointer to any website or on-line gallery you might have or be involved with.
And if you provide the sage wit and oddball humor, I'll provide the counterbalance with sage humor and oddball wit.
Oh, and by the way, were you born with a tail?
(Don't be offended. Everybody gets asked that...)

Re: Hello
Hello DebbrahF and welcome!!
You will find a few others here with rather warped senses of humour...it's all good LOL.
I would LOVE to see some of your glasswork. I know it's different than stained glass, but I know how much I enjoy stained glass. My middle daughter used to work in stained glass when she was a teenager, and she loved it, even though it was hard work. This was the real deal, not what a lot of people term stained glass now-days.
I hope you'll post some photos of some of your work.
--- Blessed Be,

Re: Hello
A tail? Not to my knowledge. I was furry though (I was a bit premature.) And I was promptly adopted by the family dogs (a big black tibetian mastiff and a big black lab mix) the moment I came home.
As for the crazy... I love a challenge.....
Thank you about my glass. I need to sign up for a photo-hosting site so I can post here. I love glass. It is like no other substance. You aren't working the material as much as the light. I did stained glass in high school, and it was amazing how different the same substance could look in different lighting conditions. Visually, working with glass is like working with pure color. Someday I have dreams of having a kiln to fuse glass in. It's not in the current budget, however. Glass blowing has also intrigued me, other than I don't like the idea of things exploding in my face. And I just KNOW I would have to touch some molten piece. It is almost a law of nature. OOOOH, shiney, must touch.
I also love wood- NOTHING smells better than lightly scorched sawdust. And no one can resist touching something carved in wood. Wood is just the most tactile substance out there. I need to do more with wood, so expect to see some of that as well.
On the dragon.... I definately need to do some dragons. There are at least three events I plan to do a booth at this year, and I think dragons would do well at any of them (an earth-day event frequented by new ager types and two pagan pride events.) I'll check out the contest.
Probably the best website I could point to right now is http://www.profitablehobbies.com/ both for the gallery and the weekly webcasts. I got my highspeed rotary tool and microsandblaster through them and have taken a couple of classes. There are some amazing artists and great people connected to them. And there is a weekly webcast. Right now it is focused on marketing, and the guy who runs it has done very well and helped some of the others do very well. He says he has a mission to eliminate the starving artist cliche.
Anyway, thanks for the welcome. I'll go poke around some more now.

Re: Hello
Chihuly is the coolest! I too have tried to dabble in the glass arts. About 10 years ago, all I wanted for Christmas was glass blowing lessons. My parents really tried but couldn't find anyone in the area. Instead they got me an awesome book about it. The whole thing is "handwritten" - i.e., images of hand scrawled text. I'll post the name when I get home - it's the best.
