I suppose this is a good place to post about an artist who has been an inspiration to me. (if not, I'm sure Corbin will find a good place for it!)

Melissa Miller is actually a local Austin artist but she is known nationwide. I don't really know what her general popularity is, but it doesn't matter - I just like her work!

I went to her studio when I was in high school and my interest in the arts was flagging. My aunt wanted me to see what a "real artist" did for her craft. I was thoroughly impressed. She had a studio built out in the hill country on top of her garage. It had enormous windows all along one wall that looked out onto rolling green hills with hardly any man made objects in sight. Her studio was full of mock ups and practice pieces but they were all beautiful to me. It was really an experience to see it all!

It's hard to find much of her work online, but here are a few examples:

I paint and draw a lot of wildlife and I always thought they were boring subjects but I still liked to do it. After seeing her work, my idea of 'boring' completely went out the window!

Those are beautiful - I can see why you love her work.

Look at the difference in the tone between that first one, which is so calm (I love that monkey that is standing off to the left, just kind of looking), and the intensity of the other pieces (especially the running zebras - look at how she worked the colors of the sunset into the black & white of their coloring - , and the predator/prey piece which has the ghosted in stag), which show such action and vitality!

I like it that she doesn't present a "romanticised" version of nature - nature is fierce - but she finds - and reveals - the beauty which exists in that fierceness.
