USA state laws on indecent exposure and breastfeeding
Here's a list of state laws in the U.S. concerning nudity and indecent exposure. In most cases, the law is cited rather than quoted. Includes sentences and commentary.
http://www.nudist-resorts.org/statutes.htm
Note that a nudist organization assembled this list, so the commentary is skewed toward nudity rather than topfreedom.
===
Now, on to breastfeeding. La Leche League International assembled this list of state BF laws, as of 2007 (at this writing).
http://llli.org/Law/LawBills.html
===
Nothing specifically on topfreedom, though, and little on how any of these issues have been handled in a courtroom. Still, I think they make good starting points for anyone wishing to know what the laws in any state are.
Anyone out there (who knows someone) who's going to study Law, who wants to take on a state-by-state summary as a school project? Or who already has? That's what we need here.

Re: USA state laws on indecent exposure and breastfeeding
It would seem like the page on nudity is somewhat out of date. The section on NY doesn't seem to recognize that the State Supreme Court has ruled that women can be topless wherever men can be topless. At least that's my understanding of the law in NY. That decision was handed down a few years ago, again, from what I understand.

Re: USA state laws on indecent exposure and breastfeeding
The final decision in the New York case came on July 7, 1992. That's more than a few years back. Here in NH the law was last updated on July 2, 2008 (It is quite specific about what constitutes indecent exposure, but makes no mention of breasts.)

Re: USA state laws on indecent exposure and breastfeeding
There are some states in the USA where showing breasts is considered indecent exposure, and many states where indecent exposure is not clearly defined. Get the full rundown at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indecent_exposure

Re: USA state laws on indecent exposure and breastfeeding
>>are showing breasts considered indecent exposure????<<
In Pennsylvania, any woman trying to go topfree is likely to get arrested for indecent exposure, even though the law specifically refers only to genitalia. The City of Pittsburgh equivalent is virtually identical.
I am guessing that any woman trying to go topfree here is likely to (1) lose her case, (2) win on appeal, but in so doing then (3) touch off a controversy that will end up tightening the wording NOT in our favor. PA is incredibly prudish, outside of a couple of forward thinking pockets here and there. I say that having lived here as an adult for 26 years.
Example: It took 19 years to get a law passed protecting a mother's right to breastfeed. The final wording SEVERELY watered it down. Read the changes here . Note the inherent assumption in Sec. 4 that an exposed breast NOT for breastfeeding IS indecent exposure, open lewdness, obscenity, etc.

Re: USA state laws on indecent exposure and breastfeeding
Thats why it needs to be legal to breastfeed in all 50 states and the law on indecent exposure should be the same everywhere so you can go to any state and know what the law is without having to wonder about it. Indecent exposure needs to be limited to just the genitals, breasts are not genitals and thus not indecent. That way the issue is settled and everyone is happy.

disagree. That's why we have states, so the people can adjust laws to their liking at a more local level. I think we both favor looser laws, but what right do we have to tell people in Wyoming (random state, if you live there, pretend I said Idaho) what their laws should be? I wouldn't want them to deciding my laws either.

We as a society should have the same standards for everyone and not have 50 different ideas on what indecent exposure is. This isnt just some issue that affects some states more than others, its something that has an impact on everyone. I want people to have equality no matter where they go in this country instead of them not being able to go to Wyoming or Idaho for example just because they happen to not like bare breasts there. Were all part of the United States (except the international members here) so when it comes to things like morality we should all be united. The only people who dont want equality and freedom for women are people who are prejudiced or bigotted and I thought this country was against that sort of thing? Sooner or later women are gonna get the same equal rights as men everywhere reguarding their breasts so its easier if people just accept it now instead of fighting all the way only to have it happen anyways. They need to move into the 21st century like the rest of us.
