"Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?"
Captain Kirk said, "To boldy go where no man had gone before!"
Split infinitive! He should have said, "To go boldly where no man has gone before."
Captain Picard said, "To boldy go where no one has gone before..."
Gibberish! Each and every alien Picard met on his travels was someone. Each and every one of them was there before him. At least Kirk said he was going where no human male had gone before. He may have been going where a human female had been before.
Neil Armstrong said, "One small step for man. One giant leap for mankind."
Also meaningless as man and mankind are the same. He was supposed to say, "One small step for a man. One giant leap for mankind." He forgot the indefinate article.
Before anyone nit picks back I know Kirk was an American played by a Canadian, Picard was a Frenchman played by a Briton and Neil Armstrong is American, which mean my examples don't fit the title. Therefore I will leave with the deputy head of a school who said, "After I learned them. They just done it."

You should never come to newfoundland. If you think that's bad, you won't be able to understand anyone here. I'm not saying people here aren't intelligent, but the slang is really bad.

Yes, I did!!! And it´s not easy for a not-native-speaker to understand him. It sounds always like he has chewing gum in his mouth - even if he has no chewing gum.

Re: "Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?"
Actually there was some recent news about Neil Armstrong's statement. He has always claimed he said "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." Recent analysis of the recordings does support his contention. The "a" was somewhat lost in transmission.

Yes Neil Armstrongs words were always a bit of a mystery.I just put it down to nervousness to make the most famous gaff in history along with of course "Peace In Our Time"
One small step for man i.e. mankind one giant leap for mankind.

Re: "Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?"
Actually, I remember hearing those words from Neil Armstrong as he stepped onto the moon. It was an exciting time! I do not remember hearing the critics talk about the grammar - the joy and sense of national pride prevailed. The grammar police only got to harp on it all after the sense of national pride began to simmer down.
Perhaps others have different memories.

Re: "Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?"
I don't recall that anyone talked about it at the time, but 'one small step for man' and 'one small step for A man' have different meanings. It is clear that Neil Armstrong intended the second meaning, but he certainly spoke the first sentence.
