Reason to vote
He was my pick, but now maybe I'll actually have a reason to vote for somebody instead of against somebody else:

Re: Reason to vote
This is not a political website, but one reason to vote for Barack Obama that is relevant to our issues in that McCain has praised Bush's judicial appointments and has said that he plans to appoint more justices like Scalia, Thomas, Alito, and Roberts. These justices vote consistently against our traditional protections in the Bill of Rights, except, of course, the Second Amendment, which is the only one they seem to take seriously. I long to live again in a country where my rights are protected against a government run amok.
Also, Obama was always at the top of his class, while McCain was at the bottom when he was a legacy student at Annapolis. The present administration should convince that in a president smarts count.

Re: Reason to vote
Bottom of the class at the Naval Academy would be top of the class at many colleges.

Re: Reason to vote
Obama was president of the Harvard Law Review, the staff of which consists of the top students at Harvard Law School. The Harvard Law School is itself very selective, and Obama did not list himself a black on his application, so he did not benefit from affirmative action. Therefore, he was the cream of the cream. School smarts aren't everything and McCain does not show as much obvious ignorance as Bush, but he has had a lot of embarrassing stumbles based on his lack of understanding of things. I am older than McCain and there have been some very effective old leaders, so I am not holding his age against him.

Re: Reason to vote
I view the US election as a less than casual observer. I don't know who the best man for the job is, but I hope the US members of this site will vote for who they think the best man for the job is - regardless of his ethnicity or age. (I would have said person for the job and gender, ethnicity or gender if Mrs Clinton had become the Deomcratic candidate instead of Mr Obama.)
However, I will say that the USA takes a bloody long to select the candidates and then wait till November for the election proper.
Also as this is supposed to be a site about topfreedom by women for women I would point out that in the UK women should feel a moral obligation to vote because of how hard the suffragettes struggled to get it in the first place. For example chaining themselves to railings, hunger strikes, throwing bricks into shop windows and in the most extreme case of all sacrificing yourself by throwing yourself under the King's horse at the Derby.
I know nothing of the Suffragists struggle in the USA but suspect it was the same sort of thing.
I always vote. This is for the simple reason that if we don't the powers that be will take it away from us.
Winston Churchill once said, "Democracy is a terrible system, but it is better than the alternatives." You may or may not know that his mother was American. In the film she was played by Anne Bancroft.
Furthermore the first female British member of parliament was Nancy Astor an American who married a British aristocrat, which was quite common in those days. (See Winston Churcill.)
Actually strictly speaking she was the first to take her seat. The first to be elected was Countess Markovitz, but because she was a member of Sinn Fein she wouldn't take the oath of allegance to the King.
Yours faithfully
Simon

Re: Reason to vote
Maybe Obama was a top Harvard Law grad, but from what he says about issues of the day and (especially off teleprompter) how he says it (and how often he changes it), by implication he makes Harvard Law grads sound like empty suits.
(That was the equal time comment. Any further posts that go into details about qualifications of presidential candidates will be deleted as off-topic. Posts that address how a presidential candidate will respond to the topfreedom issue such as who may get appointed to the Supreme Court are always welcome.)
