Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is, of course, home to a big nudist beach at Maspolomas but we have never been there as it is some way from where we have stayed on three visits to the island. This is at a resort about half way between Puerto Rico and Amadores on the south-east coast. We feel that Puerto Rico is over-commercialised with lots of high rise hotels and apartment blocks but Amadores is much more laid back. It has a beautiful artificial white sand beach in a curving bay and at the back of the beach are just single storey shops and restaurants all with the same style of roof.
The swimming is excellent with a gently shelving beach into deeper water and very sheltered. At the time we have been, the people on holiday generally seem to be couples plus the odd family group. Most of the women are topless and many in thongs, many of them smaller than most I have seen elsewhere. There are far fewer men in thongs (why is that when reports say that they are often in the majority at the nudist beaches ?).
There is a mile long walkway linking Puerto Rico and Amadores which hugs the coastline with cliffs behind and the sea on the left. This walkway becomes a fashion parade during the day for every type of beach wear ranging thorugh cover-ups, kaftans, brief shorts and tops and all types of swimwear. Anything goes in this respect with thong wearers mixing with bikini wearers and those with one piece costumes.
I usually walk along the walkway to the beach with a top over my thong while Rachel usually wears shorts with a one piece or a bikini top. On the return journey,particularly if we have not dried off, I just walk all the way back to the resort in my thong while Rachel wears just her one piece or bikini. Even if we are dry or have changed into another thong/costume), this is our normal wear. All this seems to be accepted by everyone and we have never seen or heard any response if one excludes some wolf whistles at Rachel from some road workers when she wore a fairly revealing one piece and was crossing the road to the resort (they were not for me as I was conservatively dressed that day in top and shorts !). She was quite flattered by that attention.
We count this area of Gran Canaria as one of our favouite destinations.
