Fireworks!

If any of you are interested, there's a big fireworks shindig coming up next weekend, Sept 20th.

The Iowa Pyrotechnic Association is having our annual fall picnic. We're doing this in conjunction with the city of Vinton. The end result is that we've got the county fairgrounds for the day and a permit for display fireworks to go along with it.

There will be fireworks essentially all day.
Last year we ran a "boom clock" where there was at the very least one salute (white flash-bang) per hour on the hour starting at noon.
Members may buy and shoot consumer fireworks on site (the kind of thing you'd normally have to smuggle in from Missouri...) There were 3 vendors of Class C or 1.4g fireworks last year, all with great prices...
We accept new members at the gate. Dues are $25 a year, which goes to political action keeping display fireworks legal in Iowa (the big ones) plus training and materials for classes that members are welcome to attend (this spring we had shell building classes where every participant was able to make and shoot his or her very own 4" ball shell for example).
We wrap up the day with a fireworks display of items built by IPA members, shot at a slow pace to let the artists (and these guys really are!) see the work, as well as let the afficionados see what handbuilt fireworks look like.
After that slow-paced show, we have a full blown commercial show with some of the best effects you'll see outside of major metro areas.
Keep in mind that this whole day is put on by people who are passionate about fireworks. People who do things like opt to have a big fireworks show and party instead of taking a cruise for their 40th birthdays... people who are as fired up about pyro as we are about Jeeps and off-roading (or in some cases even more so). This is a GOOD show, shot by and for pyros, without any markup or profit taking.

The city of Vinton, for their part, has food vendors come in, has live music, beer tent, etc.

It's just about the perfect way to wrap up the summer and kick off the fall, in my book.

Consider this my invitation to each of you to come out, enjoy the show, enjoy the food, join the IPA if you're so inclined, and in general just revel in the miracle of pyrotechnic art.

(Oh, and btw, PM me if you are coming up, I'll give you my cell # so you can reach me when you get to the site)
