IA 4WD Assoc taking action on full size ohv site in IA

received an email update on ia assoc mtg:

"Yesterday morning John Buttz, Bob Reese, Richard Buffington, and myself
met with the Madison county board of supervisors to see if they would be
receptive to or oppose our efforts in pursuing a Full Size OHV park near
earlham or anywhere in Madison county. David Downing who is the ATV
operations manager for the DNR was there and was very supportive of us and
shed a lot of light on issues that the board had. We all had lunch
afterwards and I was able to ask David a lot of questions I have been
wondering about with regards to liability exposure and injuries. That is
another 10,000 word email in its self so Ill save the details on that for
our meeting next month.

One of the issues brought up was noise. We explained that at the state
run park in Gilbert MN there is a decibel limit to enter the park and we
would plan having a tech inspection and a noise limit as well. The other
issue was reclamation of the land if the park is abandoned. According to
them there is a large issue with mines and quarries not reclaiming after
the minerals are exhausted and this leaves an unattractive and dangerous
landscape (perfect for us). David Downing explained how with ATV parks
they are able to control irrigation, plant trees, flowers, and native
grasses. The DNR also uses specially designed chain link fences to allow
wildlife in and out of the areas. Those were the only real issues that
they had. After that was cleared up we were specifically told that they
think it is a great idea and they think it would help to keep hooligans
out of the rivers and streams as well as level "B" roads if they have an
official place to wheel.

Our next step is to get with the Zoning director and see what is out
there. We have a few quarries in mind that we know are closed up but if
we can find something better that would be great. If we do pursue the
area near earlham we will need to meet with the City Council and talk
about our plans and get their blessing as well. A few of us are going to
do a drive by of the quarries this weekend to just look at the area. I
will email the zoning director tomorrow and get some ideas from him on
places to look. John Buttz is going to get with his contacts at Martin
Marietta, and I think Hallett? We are going to also get with Ken Tow of
the office of mines and minerals and see what he might have for us.

Please let your clubs know.

Thanks"

Brent mentioned in an email to me he would be interested in helping trailhogs trying locate a spot closer to us.

maybe a board member could get in touch with brent.

working on one ohv site is a step in the right directon and will take time and effort.
