war of the Dirt
well icalled the army corp of engineers and talked to John Castle. to make a long story short, the feds, want to hand over the land ("600" acres) because the DNR is willing to maintain it and has the budget for it according to John. evidently the federal boys don't. so the DNR boys will have complete jurisdiction and or control of the land to do as they see fit since they are shelling out the bucks.basically it comes down to the fact that they can charge a registration fee to the atv guys and make some cash, and full size vehichles don't afford them that option. of course the safety issue came up in the conversation also, seems the registration fee also covers some liability issues, which keeps the state boys happy. i also came up with the name of a one, David Downing(some of you may know who he is) he evidently will be the one who decides this mess. he is the DNR contact in Des Moines. i put in a call to him, he was gone, so i left a message....no word yet. i'll try next week also. Re: war of the Dirt
To some degree, I am going to play devil's advocate here and make the assumption/concede that the DNR does take things over. If they're main purpose for preventing full size vehicles is a "Tax/Licensing" revenue issue, then why can't they require a sticker on our vehicles???? Why can't we pay the $15 dollars to have access to the land?
I have yet to hear a logical argument that a full size vehicle in the park is dangerous to the atv or motorcycle. We don't go charging through the park at 30+ mph. We simply mozy along up and down the hills.

Re: war of the Dirt
If the DNR does take over, we will need to make our arguements or appeals to the state & again beg them to recognize us as a legitimate sport or recreation. Based on historical & traditional use, 600 acres may be the place for them to at least test the idea of allowing street legal full size vehicles off road. This may be our next alternative. Maybe we have a friend or 2 in the statehouse?

Re: war of the Dirt
sorry boys, the battle is LOST... i just had a conversation with the DNR, and they said we have no chance of gettin back into "600" acres. the lack of "interest", and "leadership" through the iowa 4x4 assoc. has not been good enough to get a 4x4 area established. even if there is one some day they will have to be completely seperate from the atv's and motorcycles! the isues are: 1 safety,ie., insurance companies are freakin out that a full size would share a riding area with atv's.2 full size rigs ruin the land much more than atv's.3 THIS is the big one...MONEY. yes i know you are shocked that a government run program would want money, but there it is. the DNR says that even if we could register our Jeeps just as the ATv's do, it would not generate enough money for them to let us in. WHY? because the population of registered atv's is huge compared to jeeps as far as making money off of off-roading.they said even if they charged us 500.00 dollars per vehichle, it would not be worth it.(it's 15.00 for atv's) now i don't know if that's really true, but i definatly believe that the insurance companies and the dollar bill are the real power here. heck we are all in the same boat.... we want to make as much money as possible, and spend as little as we have to,PLUS, we want to just spend on our little pet projects(hobbies, girls, Jeeps etc. etc.) not necessarily in that order of course, and the dnr is no different.LETS make some CASH without getting sued!!!! and by god they have figured out a way to do it. on a positive note, they (dnr) said there is federal money available for a 4x4 park, but it will take real effort, time ,and positive communications to get it done. according to them, that is exactly what the atv boys have done. well we still have some privatly owned parks we can go to. seems like more open up each year, but it's gonna be awhile before anything is close to C.R. and Iowa City again? lets see, i have jeep that books for probably 5000.00 less than i have in it,and i used to use for pretty much just off-roading, hmmmm... that was smart. hey anybody got an atv worth about 5k they would want to trade even up for a jeep cherokee? nevermind, i'll use it to pull my atv trailer i guess. hey one more positive note, rumor has it that MIOBI club land may be opened up to pay per day type thing, that would be good for us eastern iowan's. but then again who can afford the gas at 4-5 bucks a gallon? 20 bucks to get in and 100.00 for gas!! i'm done yackin for now......oh i forgot, there are 96 areas in iowa that could be developed for off road areas according to the dnr, just takes hoops and and money, put that in your pipe and smoke it.....
