600 acres and the ATV guys
Hello everyone,
Well I was just going to wait but this was the 2nd call I have recived that the "DNR is going to hand over 600 acres to the Dirt Surfers atv club"
1. DNR has no say over 600 acres as it is Fed land and not state land.
edit: DNR would like to take control of 600 acres to monitor ATV permits
2. I sent Jeffery Peck from the us army corps. a email asking to confirm or deny this.
edit: Jeffery has sent a reply please read full thread
3. If this is true we will all have to ban together to get ahold of every off road club in the state to contact legislators.
edit: Please get to writing!

Re: 600 acres and the ATV guys
Mark, You need to get ahold of me ASAP!!
In one of my conversasions with Mr. Peck when I was still an officer with Mid-West Explorers was different. In 2002 it was in the schedule to hand the ATV area over to the DNR for ADMINASRTATION in 2005, ACE would still set POLICY. Also at that time I was asured that full size would not be excluded.
Are we being ran around and is Jeff just blowing smoke up our a$$? I think we should start moving on contacting area clubs and the state group on this. Of course our decidtion to drop out of the state group may come back and haunt us now. hmmm

Re: 600 acres and the ATV guys
Here is the email I sent to the Iowa legis
Hello everyone,
I have had some concerns voiced to me in the last 2 weeks about the State of Iowa taking over the Coralville OHV park now operated by the US army Corps of Engineers. I was just wondering if any could confirm or deny this. There is a ATV group based in Cedar Rapids that says they are working with the DNR to "shut out" the full size 4x4s. I feel if there is any truth to this you all need to work to put a stop to this. On any given weekend the OHV park brings in 200-300 visitors 100+ from out of state, most spending an average of 100-125 dollars per person while they are here. Do we want to loose a rural Iowa tax base such as this by limiting it to ATV's only. ATV riders in Iowa have a numerous amount of land they can ride, full size 4x4's are limited to 129 acres at the Coralville OHV park (the only legal public ohv park in the state) Feel free to email me back about this matter, I will be sharing my findings with our club members state wide. I will also post our findings on our web site at www.trailhogsjeepclub.com

Re: 600 acres and the ATV guys
Mark: Thank you for your message and concern over the OHV park in Coralville. I have not heard about this; however, I will check on it for you. We need to have an open discussion in the legislature this year concerning outdoor recreation in general and 4x4’s and ATV’s in particular. Mary Lou Freeman

Re: 600 acres and the ATV guys
Mark, if you need another voice or signature in support of this, let me know. I haven't been out there since I sold my ZJ, but I am looking for a replacement and plan on spending many years out there. I could also round up at least 10 more people to stand behind this if needed(all Jeep owners).

Re: 600 acres and the ATV guys
Feel free to forward this to whoever if you want.
As a business owner in the vehicle offroad industry, I would be more than disappointed if this were true. Not only for personal reasons but due to the fact that 600 acres is the only legal area for offroad enthusiast in the state. Offroading and wheeling is one of the fastest growing outdoor activities, even growing into national competitions with televisied events. If anything I would think the state of Iowa would use some of it's state lands for this purpose to attract those enthusiasts from out of state and help increase local revenue. There are offroad areas in other states that attract people from all over the country, it's a positive for tourism and helping to draw revenue to smaller communities. But as a business who deals directly with these enthusiasts all over the nation, it's disheartening to keep my business here in the state of Iowa if they are unwilling to support that community.

Re: 600 acres and the ATV guys
Matt said in his reply all "Jeep owners". I too I'am partial to Jeeps , BUT in a case like this, any and all full size 4-wheelers will be welcomed to be included. The more voices the better.
I've wheeled out there since 1977 when it WAS 600 Acres,(I can remember wheel'n AROUND the lake) we're down to 129. Enough is enough!
The time to act is NOW!
