Re: 600 acres and the ATV guys

Ed, read the bold print of Joe Bolkcom's email to us, it states that the Iowa Association of Four Wheel Drive Vehicles was contacted about this and it was brushed aside by the Iowa Association of Four Wheel Drive Vehicles because they are a very busy bunch, working on their own agenda and not "State wide issues"

"I'm not sure if the Iowa Association of Four Wheel Drive Vehicles , or the Midwest4WD Association is aware of this, but it might be more effective coming from a statewide or larger group, than a very motivated, but small group of Trailhogs. The "David and Goliath" thing only worked once... "

"I would say we have a lot of catching up to do, and e-mails probably won't get it done."

Ed, the emails are just a start. As long as everyone knows about this the more support we will be able to obtain.

Re: 600 acres and the ATV guys

having just read the posts i can say i am a little surprised but certainly not shocked. maybe sites like off-road .com, Rockcrawler4x4 and off-road magazine, National off-hiway vehicle association ,Blue ribbon coalition, ,NAXJA, and some private clubs would have some ideas to help?

I read the entire thread, and understand what you are saying. The fact is that the 600 or so members of that organization, don't think that this is worth fighting for. I personally think that sucks, and is short sighted, but it is their organization. I am not a member, and have no right to tell them what to think, or what to do. My only point is that one club, or 50 individual clubs, don't carry the weight of a larger, and more organized group.

Fact is the Iafwdc is only about 250 strong representing only 4 clubs. We have been poorly represented as a group by the Iafwdc. Fact is there are 42,000 registered ATVs in the state. But there are over 500,000 registered SUV's in the state! Not every ATV that is registered is using state land, many are for ag use, utillity companys, const. companys ect. The numbers are misrepresented. It is like us saying that 500,000 SUVs are going to be driven off road. We can get the #'s to help us support this cause it is by far a closed deal. The corps do not even know about it yet it is only in the info stage at the DNR and we have a few strings to pull yet. I am aware that a few emails to the legis will not do much but it will keep it in their minds. So keep moving on and get the word out.

.develop the Eli area.

The riding area at Eli has become a haven for illegal and dangerous activity. There is unsupervised operation of full-sized off highway vehicles (Jeeps and 4x4 trucks) mixed with ATV operation. In riding areas, Jeeps and ATVs are always separated for safety reasons. The area is
also filled with folks who have unregistered ATVs and vehicles on public
property. This is illegal under Iowa code 321I and 321. When riders or operators have vehicles that they cannot register legally, they head for this unsupervised area.

The DNR is finding that the majority of illegal activity at our nearby ATV park in Waterloo comes from riders bored with riding at Eli and venture out.

The DNR law enforcement supervisor for the area has valid concerns that we need to take cooperative action with the Corps to stop the illegal activity in the area. By looking the other way, the DNR and the Corps
are inviting a fatality and liability issues. The illegal activity at the area is spreading to other state areas and creating an environmental nightmare. (No maintenance is being done, as would be provided in a designated riding area).

.

Why does it seem strange to me, that they admit illegal ATVer's are the largest problem. but their solution is to give them the land??

Can we help from the other side of the River?

Good point! ATV's have always been a problem at 600 acres and are the main reason there is a fence around the boundry.

As far as help, the more people hear about our problem the bigger the chance someone will listen to us. Spread the word!

Thanks,
Mark

Re: 600 acres and the ATV guys

I have asked the membership of the Northern Illinois Jeep Alliance to allow me to write some e-mails from the club. Who should I send them to.

I was thinking local state reps, and senators, the kind of folks that have to rely on local voters to keep their jobs. What about the local Chamber of Commerce, or Tourism Bureau?

Re: 600 acres and the ATV guys

I have talked to Dan force. He informed me that the IFWDA knew of what was going on at 600 acres. IFWDA also said it is a done deal. DNR and OHVA already have had 600 acres signed over to them. I do not have Howie's E-mail, he is the pres. of IFWDA at this time or we could send him lots of mail. I will try to get it here in the future. This is all the info I have heard, when I hear more I will keep you all informed. Later Doug
