Patrick Swayze 'optimistic' over cancer fight

Patrick Swayze is remaining optimistic, despite being diagnosed with a highly aggressive form of cancer, according to his doctor.

The actor's physician dismissed intense media speculation that he just had five weeks to live.

'Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far,' Dr George Fisher said.

'All of the reports stating the time frame of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic.'

He added that Swayze is still busy working: 'Patrick is continuing his normal schedule during this time, which includes working on upcoming projects.'

'The outpouring of support and concern he has already received from the public is deeply appreciated by Patrick and his family.'

The Dirty Dancing star was reported by US magazine National Enquirer as being on the brink of death after being confirmed with pancreatic cancer at the end of January.

It reported that the disease had spread to other organs but in a bid to fight on the 55-year-old has been flying himself for 'radical' chemotherapy at a cancer unit in Palo Alto, California.

The actor has kept his battle with cancer a secret and only told a few close friends about what he was going through while his wife of 32 years, Lisa Niemi, 51, has been a constant support.

His last film Christmas in Wonderland grossed just £40,000 and he will next been seen on screen in Powder Blue alongside Jessica Biel, Ray Liotta, and Lisa Kudrow.

The news comes just days after Swayze's 1989 Road House co-star, Jeff Healey, died from cancer in Toronto.

HOLLYWOOD star Patrick Swayze has thanked members of his Lothians-based fan club for their support following his pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
