USB Mass Storage

I've got 2 USB mass storage sticks, 1 and 2gb.
On the 1gb Ive got various files and lots of photos and occasionally I plug it in and some of the photos are missing but I've put it in today and I can't open one of the files, an error message pops up 'Document name or path is not valid, check file permissions for document or drive or use file open dialogue box to locate', I'm really annoyed at this cos it was working fine yesterday plus I tried to defrag the G drive and it told me one of my photos was corrupt.
Help..please cos I'm beginning to regret buying the flippin devices

Re: USB Mass Storage

The best way to use a new usb stick is first to format it. After that you can then place files onto it.

Use the drag and drop method for best results. As for your missing picture, this could of been corrupted before you copied it over to your stick.

Most important thing when you've finished using your stick is to use the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon which you'll see in your system tray, it'll have a small green arrow pointing left.

double-click it to open the SRH window, you'll see your storage device listed. Click once to highlight it, then tick the box at the bottom where it says 'Display device components'.

You then can select your storage device by clicking ONCE on it to highlight it then press STOP tab. You will then see a message that you can then remove your usb storage stick safely.

The reason for doing this is that it can stop any files from being either corrupted or lost as they maybe still working in the background, by pressing the STOP button halts or progress.

I myself have 2 USB sticks which I plug into the front of my tower for easy use, using the above methods I've no problems with files being either added or removed.

Thanks Wix, I'll format the 2gb before I log off.
Is there anyway i can retreive this file as there's quite a lot of work on it and restarting is something I really don't want to do?

Where is the file now ?

If it's on your computer hard drive then why not upload it to a server for safe keeping.

If it's a file that you can maybe zip and email, you can always send it to me and I'll place it on my server for safe keeping.

All records are kept strictly confidential

It's corrupt/unreadable and still on the flash drive, I couldn't send it to you cos when I click to open the message'Document name or path is not valid, check file permissions for document or drive or use file open dialogue box to locate' pops up.
I've seen a few data recovery progs but have to pay to recover the data, the cheapest so far being £13 and expensive at £40 emoticon
Ohh well it'll teach me to remove hardware before its safe to do so I HOPE

Thanks for the link and all your help Wiz, youre a star and it's been much appreciated emoticon I downloaded and it brought up the file i was looking for however the document name or path is not valid popped up when I tried to open it in word. I did use a DRS programme and it brought up a list of files and some with the file I want the only prob is I can only open them in wordpad and it is in symbols, can it be translated into English, if so how cos I'm sure the missing parts are there somewhere

Re: USB Mass Storage

Hi Wiz it's me again emoticon
Why has my 2GB flash drive suddenly started playing silly beggers? Last night when I tried to save something I was told there wasn't enough space and when I checked I hadn't even got to the quarter point. Now when I plug it in nothing happens, the red light comes on but it doesn't automatically start up and I'm asked if I want to format which I don't cos I've got all my piks and employment bits and pieces
What's gone wrong Wiz? I was a good girl and remembered to safely remove hardware when I'd done. I thought these flash drives were brill but I seem to have got 2 pains in the butt
