Motherboard installation help

My power unit died and as the casing was kind of butchered when my brother installed all the components I thought I'd get a new case as well. It arrived today and I've got the motherboard in, and all the cables connected.....except the most important ones, namely the power on cables.

I've looking at the motherboard, then the manual and lastly the cables for the last hour or so and I am admitting defeat. I just cannot get my brain to work out what way round the cable's go, so was hoping if you could help.

(All images should be clickable thumbnails, click for full size)
The cables that need attaching are:

Power SW

Reset SW

HDD LED

The motherboard is a Gigabyte 8I848P-G, and here is the page in the manual about those cables.

Apologies if I posted this in wrong thread. If it isn't something that you're able to help me with, that's cool too.

Thanks,

Re: Motherboard installation help

Firstly you have replied in the right thread as this the help thread. You've given a very good detailed description so far which helps, thanks for that.

What I can say is that each cable end can only be placed on one way as each plastic end is tapered so you'll know which way it can go on. Looking at each end of the wires you should see an angled edge which goes on to the motherboard slots, as I quote, it can only connect one way round.

Look for the pins on where it connects to. Your picture diagram will show you as shown. If you are still not sure, then get a second opinion before you start connecting power leads. You don't want to connect any power leads to the wrong terminal as you'll fuse or blow the motherboard itself.

If you have them, wear some latex gloves to stop any static discharge and most of all, remove any jewellery, watches etc before venturing inside or handling the motherboard. You don't want any static discharges going off as it may cause certain parts around to fuse.

It's hard to establish what kind of situation you're in so far without looking at it first hand. If you can get secondary advice besides this then I'd get I.T person to have look at it, maybe a local shop or friend who understands and maybe has installed these things before.

That's about all I can offer you Pixie, software and other related problems I am pretty good with. Installing hardware like this is not my strongest area to be honest, but the information I've said is from previous experiences I have had read about.

Re: Motherboard installation help

I always figure that by providing as much info about an issue that I can then that makes it easier for those I am asking for help from. I'd hate to get my wires crossed!! lol pun intended.

Thanks for your help, I shall have another look at the cables etc tomorrow, my brain is fried and my eyes are complaining.

EDITED TO ADD: I asked for help on Tech Support Guy Forum and had the following reply:

Power LED wires go to MSG pins. - to -, + to +

Power SW goes to Soft Power Connector, PW +and -. Polarity should not matter, white is - so for safety's sake might want to plug it that way.

Reset SW to RES +/-, again polarity should not matter, but white is -

HDD LED goes to HD +/- White is -

Just thought I'd add that for future reference....however if you'd prefer me to remove the quoted part (not sure what your policy is on quoting help from other forums) just let me know, or edit yourself either is fine with me.

Someone's problem is always someone else's answer. We learn by asking so I'm 100% OK for the added content.

Using the quote box I thought was a good way on presenting it. Nice work emoticon
