posticon New profile features added in 2010 (updated May14)

We are still working to improve some of these new features, and I will keep updating this topic with new developments.

For now, here is what we've added so far:

Mostly blog-related:

March 2, 2010: Blogs were merged into profiles. In addition, profiles were given a 3-column layout with blog posts in the main center column, and miscellaneous info links down both sides.

March 18, 2010: Profiles were re-vamped to have 2 different sections, blogs and miscellaneous info.

March 19, 2010: Added the ability to comment on other people's blogs. Blog owners can hide/unhide/disable/enable comments for individual blog posts, and delete comments that are made to them.

March 25, 2010: Added the ability for blog owners to edit comments.

March 26, 2010: Blog archive links added to profiles, with each blog post having its own permalink.

March 26, 2010: You can now share blog posts on Facebook, Twitter, Digg, StumbleUpon, Delicious, Google, and/or Reddit, by clicking the "Share" link in the bottom right corner of each post.

New social networking features:

April 9, 2010: Added friends, live feed, user status, and the ability to post (shout out) to a friend's live feed.

April 9, 2010: "Home" tab now takes logged in users to their own profile. Logged out users will see what they did before.

April 13, 2010: Added usernames under avatars in friends list.

April 16, 2010: Added "like" feature for blogs and status messages.

April 20, 2010: Added "follow" feature (like a one-way friendship, an easier way to keep updated on someone's live feed, without actually having to become "friends").

April 21, 2010: Added "Bookmarks" tab with popup for easier access. This applies to profiles and other non-board pages.

May 14, 2010: Added who's following whom lists.

Re: New profile features added in 2010

To send a friend invitation:

Go to that person's profile. If they are not already linked as a friend, you'll see a link next to their avatar to add them as a friend. Enter a message, then click on 'Ok' or hit enter.

To accept a friend invitation:

Currently, you need to go to the "Friends" tab in your own profile to see if there are any friend invitations, but this will be improved in the near future. Once there, you will see their message with a link to accept or deny their invitation.

If you deny a friend invitation:

If you deny someone, they won't be able to send you another friend request to avoid harassment, but you will be able to invite them if you change your mind.

Your current status:

To put your status in the heading next to your username, click inside the bubble that's next to your avatar, type your message, and hit the enter key on your keyboard.

To post to a friend's live feed:

If you are linked as friends with someone, you'll see a link at the top of their live feed. Click on that link, then type your message into the box and hit your enter key.

What shows up in live feeds?

A lot of things will show up in live feeds, but here are a few examples.

If one of your friends creates a new board, makes a blog post, makes a comment on a blog or status message, etc., you will see it in your live feed, as well as in theirs. However, if you post a comment somewhere, you won't see it in anyone's live feed.

The same applies if you change your status, post a message to a friend's live feed, or create a new message board.

I'm not certain myself about all the details on this (Thor wrote the programming), but if something you did doesn't show up for you in a live feed, it might be because you don't need to be told because you already know you did it.

The blue [x] in status messages:

When you hover on a status message, you'll see a blue [x]. If the status message pertains to something you did, such as creating a new board, then clicking on this [x] in your own live feed will remove that entry for everyone. However, if you click on the blue [x] for something that doesn't pertain to something you did, such as one of your friends made a new friend, this will only keep you from seeing this message.

Again, I'm not certain myself about all the details on this, but this should give you an idea.

Questions or comments?

If you have any questions or comments about these features, please post them here.
