Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd

Economy Run III was a huge success, and I want to thank all who participated. I would especially like to thank Mark Long and Dave Burnham who assisted me in administering the day's activities.

I'm sure that the results are the first thing everyone who couldn't attend is looking for, and we'll have them up as soon and we can. Mark Long volunteered his entire day [got up at 4:00 am to be there in time] and dragged along his 12V power converter, his laptop, and his color printer to provide results and color printouts for all attendees.

Let me just say that when the results are posted, you will be very surprised. No one ever thought that we would see triple digits for cars at this event. Remember earlier in this thread when I said the Ecomodder guys were going to mop the floors with us? Well that was a pretty accurate prediction. Also remember that last year's event average for all vehicles was 49.56 mpg. I thought that was pretty good. This year's average? How about 64.12 mpg!

Thankfully, there were several people taking pictures during the event and we look forward to viewing them once participants have had a chance to upload them. I was too busy to take many, but here are all four that I did take.

Image
Darin Cosgrove, of Ecomodder.com drove his little Pontiac Firefly for 7 hours in from Canada. He was the last participant to top off after the run. Get this, [I'm going from memory now] he only used .98 gallons of fuel for the 104 mile run, and that wasn't good enough to win!

Image
This was taken when we arrived at the picnic area after the event. I was trying to document the Historic cars in attendance, but in my haste forgot Bill Clark's beautiful Nash Metropolitan, which pulled in about a minute after I took this.

Image
This was Will Meredith's 1998 Honda Civic EX. There were more aero modded cars this year than ever!

Image
The red Saab 96 belongs to Jonathan Schaller. Jonathan filled the slot of a last minute cancellation and we're sure glad he was able to come out. Jonathan had such a good time that he joined A.M.E.C. after the event.

Image
The biggest surprise was Chang Ho Kim's '89 Honda Civic HF [High Fuel] effiency model that had the wildest aero modded front end that anyone's ever seen. When the pics come out, you'll see what I mean. He was the overall mpg champ with 118.1 mpg with Nokian Hakka R low rolling resistance winter tires on it!!!!!

Darin,

Welcome to our forum and thanks for your positive feedback. We were honored to have you and Ben join us and elevate the level of competition at our event. This was clearly our most exciting and entertaining economy run event to date.

Forgot to mention this, while test driving my B210 last night I passed a local restaurant. The bus boy is standing there with his white apron on and he sees my weird looking car coming. He puts his hand up to his forhead in the shape of an "L". I had to laugh out loud.

Wow, Mike... So you're more loser than an apron-wearing busboy? That's pretty low. emoticon

That's what I was thinking too, Tom. That's why it was so funny.

Hi Mike,

Thanks again for all your hard work putting together the event this past weekend...it was a great time and something I'd love to do again! Seeing all the great cars and meeting everyone made the trip and the route was very challenging (my Prius hasn't seen elevation like that in awhile)!

I posted alot of pics over at ecomodder.com but wasn't sure if you want me to post them here as well or if you want me to email them to you and you can pick and choose which ones to post. There's 20+ pics so I didn't want to clog up the thread without checking with you first.

Thanks again for a great event...congrats to you and AMEC!

Matt

I'm not familiar with your photo posting tabs as it asks me for an image url rather than an insert function. I sent them to your email address as attachments so you can post them.

Thanks again!

A big thank you to Mike and everyone at AMEC for putting on a fun event. It was great to meet everyone and see the diverse group of cars and mods. I really had a great time and learned a lot about fuel economy. Your websites and links have great information.

I wish I could have stayed later on Sunday at the picnic, but we still had to pack up the campsite and try to get home at a reasonable time. Next time I will know to take Monday off as well. BTW, great campsite, the family had a great time.

Thanks again.

Hey Chang it was great to have you at our event. We were all blown away with your performance. I don't think anyone expected much from someone new, particularly from someone showing up with winter tires on. But when I saw your car prep, boy was I surprised.

Re: AMEC Economy Run III August 23rd

Thanks to Mike and the other AMEC guys that put together the ride in the woods. Its a wicked pretty part of New York and the 2 1/2 hours at 40 mph flew by. The historic award
should certainly have gone to Mike had he not chosen to run with the big dogs. He did far better than any of us in the old beater cars.

In the beater class, the difference between
first and second was about 4 tablespoons of gas. In my car, each foot feed application dumps 1/4 teaspoon of gas so touching the pedal five hundred times means I've dumped about a quart of gas. Something else to fix.

The Economy Run was a huge success. I got to meet some people that made me feel more normal, I had a nice ride and I am stimulated to try more fun gas saving things.

A few pictures are at the link below. Sorry they are all sort of a fruit salad, but Web Shots is really boofaded up tonight.

I had a great time on the economy run it was a nice way to start our AMEC picnic for 2009. I am truly impressed by the results of the cars and people entered in this event. It is just as difficult to do as winning a race of the normal kind. It’s not nearly as exciting but the technology, concentration and focus needed to do it is immense. I was happy to better my personal result from last year by 3 mpg and that was my goal. Trying to beat the true hyper milers is really hard I am really impressed by you all. I was happy to be apart of it and as usual it's always fun working with Mike Kamm and Mark long!
