Skorodenski Skull Mask Info
I was emailing with Warren Skorodenski and asked who made his skull mask. Here's what he had to say.
"George Light in Selkirk Manitoba. George worked in the casting department at the Selkirk Mental Hospital. He made Glen Hanlon and Karl Friesen's masks as well. I use to tell people that as a joke, as it turned out I asked him what Hospital he worked at the last time we spoke a few years ago and he told me the Mental Hospital. I had to laugh and tell him my story. He had a good laugh as well. My last mask was a Harrison. Not sure if Bones had his skull mask first or not. All I know is my skull was painted in the late seventies when I played for the Wranglers and I didn't know who bones was until we played against each other in the AHL in the eighties. Bones did not play in Vancouver until 78-79. I had the skull Mask in Calgary playing junior when Bones was with the Cowboys and he wasn't wearing the Bones Mask then."

Re: Skorodenski Skull Mask Info
More comments from Skoro...
"Funny thing with the Skull Mask, I never thought anything of who had the 1st or original skull mask, me or Bones until I was reading one guy putting down the other guy and maybe me in a way for copying in his mind. Totally not a chance, he may have been exposed to the Bones mask 1st but that’s about as far as it goes. One thing for sure, one was not made to look like the other.
When Harrison made my last and only mask he said it would be exactly like my original mask, same slits and wholes and paint job. When my Harrison mask arrived and I saw it beside mine I was pissed. They didn't look at all the same. I didn't think any or at least not many photos were ever taken of it. It was sanded down the first chance I had and re painted."

Re: Skorodenski Skull Mask Info
personally I thought Skoro's Harrison skull mask was way better looking than his original(one pictured above)
Bromleys skull mask is also much better looking than Skoro's original.More detail and it looked scary and intimidating.Skoros original isnt terrifying at all.Not even close Bromley's skull is king.

Re: Skorodenski Skull Mask Info
Who had a scull mask first doesn't interest me too much. I did not know that he gave his original mask to Harrison or even that he had an original mask. I always though the 2 scull masks he had were made by Harrison. I have a game where he is wearing Harrison's so he could not have painted over it that quickly. I wonder if it inspired the Bromley mask or if he was given Skoro's original mask after Bromley's came out.

Re: Skorodenski Skull Mask Info
Does anyone have a nice side view of the original mask? That looks like it sure had great coverage. I bet it was bear to pull off the plug when it was being made.
Thanks
Jon

Re: Skorodenski Skull Mask Info
Thirty years ago, there were no "mask painters". Most of the goaltenders either painted their masks themselves or the trainer or a friend. Hockey equipment wasn't the fashion show it is today. A goaltender wasn't trying to please the fans or anybody else with his mask's look. If he liked it, that was all that mattered.
