Old Warrior's Mutant Chronicle's (Need Players Again)

This game should prove rather fun I think.

I am already planning on setting up one game to see how I can get everything running. I think I can do similar to Warhammer Quest, but the dynamics of the game are rather different.

Anyone who wants to play, or who would consider playing, please read the game rules summary by clicking on the following link.

Mutant Chronicles, Rules Summary pdf

I plan to develop this game in a new message board, devoted entirely to Old Warrior's Mutant Chronicles. I will give the link to that new gaming location as soon as I am ready to get the game off the ground. It will take some time, since I will be trying to scan images into my pc and perhaps will be taking some pictures to use as well.

Anyone interested in playing, please let me know here. I need FOUR players in addition to myself. I will be playing the Dark Legion (the bad guys). Forget artificial intelligence! You will get the real thing in this game, because you will be going up against the God of Machinations AND your fellow Doomtroopers as well. No, you will not be attacking each other, but you will be competing for supremacy, advancement and etc....

Each player will choose one of the five corporations (each corporation has two doomtroopers that will be under the player's control, but they are not very complicated to play). Please remember to check out the different advantages each corporation gets (added in reply below). There will be no duplicate corporations played -- meaning that each corporation may only be chosen by one player.

Some Comparisons to Warhammer Quest

WQ = Warhammer Quest
MC = Mutant Chronicles board game

Depth - MC does not go nearly into depth as much as WQ and it does NOT have anywhere near as much warrior development as WQ.

Competition Versus Cooperation - In WQ, the warriors are supposed to work as a team in order to survive and accomplish their goals. While this is still greatly true in MC, the teams may also work contrary one to the other, since they are NOT all part of the same team (strictly speaking). Each corporation is a team of two by itself.

Actions Versus Attacks/Movement - the Doomtroopers do NOT have a number of attacks or a number of movement exactly. They have a number of actions (something like Deathwatch Quest40k by Cutlass -- but not as technical). The Doomtroopers may use each action (basically two actions per turn per doomtrooper, but there are exceptions) either for movement OR for attacking. They may move twice, attack twice, or do one of each in any order.

Each movement action is up to three spaces in any direction, but NOT through another model, a wall or other obstruction. Each attack (more compicated) is either a melee or a ranged attack (see rules for more details).

Experience and Loot - MC uses a more simple system of advancement. The doomtroopers gain promotion points for accomplishing certain things and automatically begin the next mission with their new Rank -- based upon the amount of promotion points earned. Also, their is a system of credits which can be used to acquire certain equipment to assist in tougher missions.

Enemies - In MC, the different types of enemies are not as numerous as in WQ. There are just a handful of types, but they really are a "handful" when fought in battle. Instead of getting new, meaner, tougher monsters as the warriors increase in level, MC provides a system in which the monsters (same types already faced) also develop to keep pace with the doomtroopers.

Killing Enemies - In MC, the enemies do not have a number of wounds like in WQ. The enemies just die if a doomtrooper's attack is strong enough to overcome the enemy's armour rating.

Death-blow - In WQ, it is one of the things warriors count on getting to use. In MC, it is non-existant -- except as the Violator Sword seems to immitate it. The Violator Sword's ability is like the death-blow, but it basically strikes all the monsters at the same time (as far as dice rolling is concerned) -- similar to (though slightly different perhaps from) the Whirling Blades skill that can be learned in the Fighting School in WQ.

Note: the Violator Sword is a special weapon that can be acquired during a campaign.

Melee & Ranged Combat - In WQ, melee (and magic at times) seems to be the most likely method of destroying the most monsters; but, in MC, shooting down the foe with a powerful gun is just as important (if not more so) as cutting them down with a melee weapon. In fact, the enemies are NOT to be placed upon spaces immediately adjacent to Doomtroopers. The Dark Legion also has various creatures that are better at ranged or better at melee.

LOS - Line of sight in MC is almost exactly the same as in WQ but with one major exception: models cannot shoot through other models to shoot their target. An exception to this is area effect and penetrating type weapons (I am thinking of the Grenade Launcher and the _____ Puker -- can't remember the full name of that one at the moment.).

Wounds - Each Doomtrooper begins each mission with 5 Wounds. Don't let that scare you, because the damage system is different than WQ as well -- generally, less wounds are caused by the enemy.

Survival - In WQ, warriors die. In MC, they seem to die, but are ready to go again when the next mission starts. emoticon However, they can lose a good bit of their "XP" if they "die" too often. In WQ the warriors become unconscious at ZERO Wounds; in MC, they "die" immediately. In WQ, their are many types of healing/restoration of wounds; but, in MC there are only a couple pieces of equipment that can do any healing.

Number of Players - Similar to WQ, there is a set number of players for which the game is designed (five for MC and four for WQ). However, the game seems to work fairly well with fewer players (no fewer than two, but I recommend at least three).

Number of Warriors/Doomtroopers - Each player in MC has one corporation that has two Doomtroopers (one melee specialist and one ranged). So ultimately, and ideally, MC has ten warriors (8 doomtroopers in each mission, with one team sitting out each mission so that player can play the Dark Legion) that go up against the evil Dark Legion.

Treasures? - WQ abounds with treasures and more treasures! MC... well, there aren't really any treasures (that I can recall). Instead, the doomtroopers get to acquire weapon upgrades and more and better equipment before each new mission.

Winning the Game - In WQ all who survive to fight another day are the winners (my interpretation); but, in MC, while there is some similarity of winning in this manner, the real winners are the doomtroopers who gain the most Promotion Points and Credits (victory conditions can be modified). For the first game here, I will probably show who wins each mission and then who the overall winner is at the end of the entire campaign. Oh, yeah, did I mention that the Dark Legion might be able to win under my online rule adjustments (it can win a mission or even the entire campaign -- though the latter is not very likely)?

Well... I think that about covers it for now.

The Five Corporations (a Sixth may be available in the future)

Bauhaus - Crack Shots. Roll 1 extra die when attacking with firearms.

Imperial - Intuition. Gain 1 Extra Action at the start of each turn (this will be only 1 extra action for one or the other doomtrooper in the team to use each turn. I think a total of 6 actions verus only 4 actions for other players would be too much, so I am interpreting it to be a total of 5 actions for the team).

Cybertronic - Advanced Armor. Roll 2 dice instead of one to absorb hits.

Capitol - Superior Tacticians. Start each mission with 1 extra Doomtrooper card (each, for a total of 4 Doomtrooper cards over against only 2 for other teams).

Mishima - More Agile. Move 4 squares per Move action (over against 3 squares per move for other doomtroopers).

I want to emphasize that only four players besides myself may join this game. That means that I need three more. Once I have three more volunteers, I will not be able to accept any more players in the game.

Maybe in the future, I will be able to figure out how to allow five (or even six) teams to enter each mission, but for now I must stick with the original design of the game.

Good News! The actual board game arrived in the mail today. Now, I can scan sectors (board sections), cards, tokens, corportaion tray cards -- with pegs inserted (if I wantemoticon ), dice, and models. Woohoo!

Don't worry, I have the day off and will try to update my WQ games as well. I might have to nudge some warriors along the way...

Here are some samples of preparations I made today for online gameplay of a very fun game (the Mutant game emoticon):

Image

Mutant Chronicles Dice
(and what they mean)

Image

1D6 Conversions for Online Play

Image

As you may notice, there is only a 33% chance to hit with each white die, while red dice give a 50% chance and black dice (the best) give a 66% chance to hit. The dice are rolled once for hits AND for damage. The number of hits is basically the number of wounds caused as well.

With a single attack of three white dice (their starting damage dice), a Doomtrooper is more likely than not to kill a Legionaire (the weakest of the Dark Legion -- sort of like goblins in WHQ), since they have a ZERO armour rating.

Example Game In Progress

The image below is the way my first solo campaign at home appeared tonight 17 Dec. 2007) after recreating the end of the round condition of the game into the online format.

This is the Trapped! mission (#2), where the Doomtroopers are trying to escape the Ezoghoul. Some of the troopers used teleportal stuff and molecular phasing to get to the end of the mission quickly, but an early Dark Teleportation event brought the Ezoghoul down upon their heads. Also, the Legionarie's Charge came shortly thereafter to further slow the Doomtroopers' advancement.

There are but three or four rounds to go and it seems that the Dark Legion has the upper hand, since eliminating the Ezoghoul is very unlikely at this stage in the Doomtroopers development.

End of the final Round of my Second Primary Mission

This image shows the final state of the board game (end of my second mission, Trapped!

Only three Doomtroopers escaped through the only exit, one from each of three corporations. The three other Doomtroopers from those corporations were eliminated by the Dark Legion.

The Cybertronic corporation persistently held out to the end, even with all the Necromutants and the Centurion's extra attacks provided by the last Dark Legion's last Event Card AND a furiously dangerous Ezoghoul breathing down their necks! That Cybertronic armour enhancement is well worth the time and investment that somebody put into it!

Re: Old Warrior's Mutant Chronicle's (Volunteer to Play?)

Well, so far, I have Stafighter and Cutlass and (maybe Auroya. This means I will still need one or two more players, depending on whether Auroya is in or not.

Once we have four volunteers, I will make a random roll to see who gets to choose their corporation (can only be one of each corporation at a time) first, second and so on. For this reason, I highly recommend that potential players read the rules and look closely at the special abilities of each corporation.

Remember while doing this that one Doomtrooper of each corporation is a Close Combat specialist and may not as likely get to do as much shooting in the earlier part of the campaign (Primary Missions 1 and 2 especially -- maybe more depending upon how successful the corporation becomes early on in the game).

Here are the links to the corporation trays topic and the rules topic in the new game (currently under construction). Read the two pdf files on the rules for much understanding of gameplay. Read my modified rules (still in progress) to see how the game will be played in my Old Warrior's Mutant Chronicles message board.

posticon Getting Very Close....

I believe I am done with the rules topic for the new game. This should help us to get on with the game.

We might have to start without one or two of the four players needed. I sure hope not, because it seems most fun to have a total of five players.

So far, I have myself (Dark Legion player), Cutlass and Starfighter. Auroya is still a maybe. I will email/PM each of you. Please everyone respond here if you really want to play.

With just a little more formating, I think we could begin the first mission -- a training mission -- some time today or tomorrow. We shall see....

Starfighter brought up the question of when you get to choose your corporation. I will randomly decide the order in which you will get to choose your corporation, but this must wait until I know who will be playing.

Re: Old Warrior's Mutant Chronicle's (Volunteer to Play?)

Man O man! I have been busy! I played two whole missions of Mutant Chronicles (SoC board game) today in my computer room. The corporations beat the socks off of the Dark Legion in the Assault the East Tower mission, but the Dark Legion came out best in the mission where the primary mission is to destroy the computer thing... lol.

Just when things were looking doubtful for the Doomtroopers anyway, a Nepharite Spectral Displacement thing turned the computer's sector 90 degrees, making for a greater distance for some troopers to travel and more Dark Legion minions in their way as well. Plus the Nepharite that arrived was a real thorn in the Doomtroopers' sides. emoticon

Anyway, to see some of what I have done today on the online game development, please visit Old Warrior's Online Journal

Things are really taking shape! I need one or two more victims... ahem..... well you guys know what I mean.

I just read an email from Auroya and he is ready to play.

We only need one more player. emoticon

If we do not get one by Monday or Tuesday, I might try to play the last corporation myself. I think it would be sort of confusing for someone to play two corporations, when they are supposed to be in competition.

As of this post, I have decided to go ahead and try to get the game started with the random rolls for the order in which players get to choose their corporations.

I plan to go last and choose from the remaining two corporations.

However, my invitation is still open to anyone who would like to play the forth corporation in the game.

Starfighter, Cutlass, and Auroya, please go to the new game's chat & orders topic to begin. emoticon I will post the order for choosing your corporation there.

I was thinking. I have just been looking at all the weapon cards and equipt cards.

When I look at a cooperation, it says which weapons each Doomtrooper has. But.. do they really start with those?, or do they have the option to select other things before mission start?

okay, Auroya, Starfighter, Cutlass AND now Aecrylis all have access to the Besiege the Citadel game forum. emoticon

No, the corporations are not all the same, Aecrylis. The three remaining ones have these special abilities:

Mishima -- move 4 squares (instead of three) for each of their movement actions -- potentially moving 8 squares with two actions, whereas the others could only move 6 squares with two actions.

Capitol -- get a total of FOUR Doomtrooper Cards for each mission (instead of the standard two). This can give some very helpful tactical advantages during game play.

Imperial -- get one extra action at the beginning of each of their corporation turns in the game. This one action is to be used by one or the other Doomtrooper in the party. The longer the mission (number of rounds it has), the greater this advantage can be.

For the Trial by Fire mission -- for training (be sure to read those specific rules before playing this first mission), the doomtroopers only carry the weapons shown on their models -- which you will see depicted in the Rules Book and the Missions Book as well.

Valerie for intance is holding both a sword AND a gun, which I interpret to be a punisher combo, since this weapon card represents the two basic weapons being used by the same trooper.

Attila III on the other hand only has a gun. Therefore, I gave him a Plasma Carbine which uses 3 dice for firearm combat, but only one die for Close Combat.

Any Doomtrooper that only carries a sword, like Yojimbo, will NOT have a friearm attack ability during the trial mission.

Basically, for Trial by Fire mission, a weapon designed for a certain type of combat grants the ability to use three White Dice while attacking for the intended type of attack. The only exception (my own interpretation) is that you may attack in Close Combat with one White Dice while carrying ONLY a Plasma Carbine, but no sword.

posticon Failed Attempt/ New Game -- Serious this time

Click on Old Warrior's Mutant Chronicles link at the top of this page to see the game's message board.

I am re-opening this topic because the one game I started died due to player inactivity.

I am hoping to get this going once again, but plan to use my new mapping method to make the games easier for me to update and hopefully make them more user-friendly as well.

I intend to have larger maps, with tool-tips (text box with info) for each model image on the game board/map as well as clickable Doomtrooper models so that one may see the current player's cards, wounds and etc.... (Yes, I will stick with keeping the Doomtrooper cards secret as long as they are supposed to be kept secret).

Anyway, I am really excited about this game, because I recently have received a whole bunch of custom materials to help me in planning several missions for the future.

So, perhaps we can get things going once again. I will need Cutlass to confirm that he wants to continue playing -- if he does. Also I will need PaulusWHQ to confirm his desire to play -- and ability to do so (lol).

Then I will need two more players as well.

All players will be choosing again which corporation they want to play. Yes, the Brotherhood will be an option as well (Cutlass gets the Brotherhood) - since he already requested it for the next game. I still need to finish the creation of the Brotherhood's cards and other things. Also, PaulusWHQ gets to play Cybertronic if he confirms here.

I am scrapping the first mission, Trial by Fire, but will request that all players become well-acquainted with the rules so that we may jump right into the full-featured gameplay. Dont' worry, if someone makes a mistake I will be just as mean about it as I am in Warhammer Quest (not mean at all I hope). emoticon

Here are links to the rules:

Rules Book and Missions Book (pdf)

Rules Summary (pdf)

I am thinking of making all corners between diagonal squares on the game board as see-through meaning that we will not have to concern ourselves with some of the corners blocking LoS and some not blocking LoS. This would help simplify gameplay and do away with some of the tediousness and game-slowdown through the "yes you can... no you can't" ranged attack dilemmas.

Here are two completed Sectors for the new mapping method:

Sector 1

Sector 1

Note: these map images are not perfect, because the original squares I had to work with (from actual game-board scans) are imperfect (not perfectly square and NOt the same size as each other), and to work in my new html table method they need to be perfectly square, so I modified each square to fit, which causes some inconsitancy in appearance.

Re: Old Warrior's Mutant Chronicle's (Need Players Again)

Continue playing confirmed! emoticon

Ps: you might (or not) be happy to know there's a new version of this game scheduled for released by Fantasy Flight Games. Knowing them they'll probably revamp the whole thing. It will be a "collectible miniatures game" which will probably suffer from the flaws that are inherent to most collectible games: the expansions are better than the originals. Nevertheless it looks quite good.

Read more about it here.

Wow! I had heard mention of the new game in the works, but seeing is amazing. emoticon It appears that the minis are going to be a really good size too.

It seems to me that it is taking the same general direction of Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40k battle games. I will probably be sticking to the board game version, unless someone develops some type of online version where I wouldn't get into trouble playing in their game. emoticon

Only Cutlass?

It seems, Cutlass, that all of our original MC SotC players except for you and me are either indisposed or no longer interested in playing.

If you would care to play as two or three corporations -- or even all of them, let me know. I would probably just try to make the games a little tougher and you could ignore trying to compete between the corporations. I would play corporations to fill in any empty spots that you wouldn't care to fill.

While playing solo, I have found the competition factor such a low priority that I usually forget about it. It ends up being the Doomtroopers agains the Dark Legion, PERIOD. emoticon

I know there still is the option of seeking players elsewhere -- like GameBoardGeek.com for instance, but I would prefer to wait for that until I have revamped everything to make updating the game much easier.

In the meantime, if you would like to play in this manner, let me know. We would plod along slowly while I am in this transition stage -- creating and implementing my new mapping stuffs.
